The Manufacturer (Kotech) kindly replaced it but I had same issue.

This is troubling because I am afraid of hard drive failure from overheating if a data transfer lasts more than a few minutes.

They need to speed up the adoption of USB 3.0 because it's great when it works.

I have several external drive enclosures with USB 2.0, and this one which is USB 3.0. Everyone can dig up the specs on the raw bandwidth of USB 2.0 and 3.0, but here's what I tested using: Thinkpad W510, ATTO Disk Benchmark v2.46 (Bench32), and a 7200RPM 500GB drive in this NextStar3 enclosure.

The two tests I did was basically plugging in this into USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 slots on my Thinkpad, and here's the result:

USB 2.0 slot with NextStar3 enclosure: WRITE: 22MB/sec READ: 30.5MB/sec

USB 3.0 slot with NextStar 3 enclosure: WRITE: 59MB/sec READ: 88MB/sec

Big difference!

The NextStar3 case is rigid too. I can press it down pretty firmly and it won't dent, unlike my other cheaper USB 2.0 plastic cases.

I bought this enclosure with the hope of using a 3TB drive. As most, I was disapointed when it showed up as a 750GB drive. I reviewed the ASUS website and was again disapointed. As a last effort, I sent an email to their support website. The next day I received a response with a link to a zip file with new firmware (link below). It works great now showing up at the 2.72TB. Also the enclosure re-opens without issue. One of the other reviews here stated that once you "snap it close, you can't re-open it." It closes and re-opens easily with two screws. I am using the enclosure with a Hitachi DeskStar 3TB SATA3 7200rpm drive.

Dear Valued Customer,
Here is the link to download firmware update for NST-380S3 to support 3TB's hard drive and please remove the hard drive to perform the firmware update.

I loved everything about this! The installation was a snap! Nevertheless, I gave the product 4 stars because once you snap it in, it cannot be pulled apart. If your HDD dies, and you want to replace it, you might break the case trying to pull the HDD out. There aren't even instructions telling you how to take it apart. Despite this, it's a great product.

I bought one of these only a couple of weeks ago. It has old firmware that doesn't support 3TB hard drives. Vantec provided an updated formware to me, but this still doesn't work with 3TB drives under Linux. It's an ASMedia chipset and if you look up the USB id (174c:5106) on Google, there are many links relating to this chipset and 3TB drives under Linux.

I bought this enclosure based on my experience with previous purchases of Vantec Enclosures.
Pros: Very fast, easy to assemble.
Cons: It gets very warm about 30 minutes after power up just idling and almost too hot to touch after a large data transfer. This is troubling because I am afraid of hard drive failure from overheating if a data transfer lasts more than a few minutes.
Overall: My next device of this type will be either a dock type or some brand of enclosure with a cooling fan.

I recommend this drive enclosure, even if you don't have a USB 3 port. This enclosure worked quite well with the USB 2 ports on my Mac and PC. With USB 2 ports, it can easily pin read and write at 30 MB/sec. The enclosure feels pretty sturdy to me. Inserting and removing the bare drive may require some effort of pushing and pulling because a rubber shimmy is used to force the drive to have contact against the aluminum case which acts as a heat sink. The case gets warm.

I purchased this device because I already had the Vantec Nexstar with USB 2.0 and eSata. I was happy with that one and figured that since this one supports USB 3.0, I'd make out well plugging in my SATA 2 drives. I am disappointed at the performance of this device. Though speed measurements are higher than 2.0, it is not what I had expected. It works, and is faster than my Nexstar 2.0 device so it is a keeper, but I would not recommend this to anyone expecting to get very fast USB 3.0 speeds. You won't.
