5.0 out of 5 stars Message From Opticon: Orgy Have Created A Masterpiece
I'll be perfectly honest, I wasn't a big fan of "Candyass." "Stitches" was perfect, but the rest was mostly lacking (especially their cover of New Order's classic "Blue Monday"). 3.0 out of 5 stars Very lackluster
Two great songs on it with a few "eh" songs on it. This whole CD sounds like the stuff that normal bands would put near the end of their CD where everyone just gets tired of listening to it after the hits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Message From Opticon: Orgy Have Created A Masterpiece, November 9, 2000
This review is from: Vapor Transmission (Audio CD)
I'll be perfectly honest, I wasn't a big fan of "Candyass." "Stitches" was perfect, but the rest was mostly lacking (especially their cover of New Order's classic "Blue Monday"). When I heard Orgy where making a follow-up, I didn't think much of it. Then I heard they were going in a heavier and more electronic direction, and that this time, there would be no covers. My interest was sparked. So after hearing the ridiculously catchy "Fiction (Dreams In Digital)," my mind was made up. I went out and bought "Vapor Transmission." And after finally tearing myself away from the single long enough, I listened to the CD all the way through. The result? As my title said, a masterpiece. It's like Depeche Mode covering Nine Inch Nail's "Broken" album. Not one bad song here, and "Fiction (Dreams In Digital)" isn't even the best song here. "The Odyssey," "Opticon," "107," "Eyes-Radio-Lies," and "Chasing Sirens" are all, in my opinion, the best songs here. Perhaps the biggest shock to me was that all (yes, all) of these songs are incredibly catchy. The guitars are heavier than on "Candyass," but I wouldn't call them aggressive at all, just distorted and heavy (just the way I like it). The more electronic diection that Orgy said they were taking is evident, especially on songs like "Fiction (Dreams In Digital)" and "Chasing Sirens." However, the biggest improvement on Orgy's sophomore effort is Jay Gordan. Let's face it, he didn't do a great lyrical job on "Candyass," and most of the songs were a bit uninspired ("Dizzy," anyone?). With "Vapor Transmission," however, he makes a huge improvement. On "Eva" (which I read was written as a tribute to producer Josh Abraham's late mother) Jay is completely touching. Others, like "Opticon" for example, Jay sings about fakes and religion (thankfully telling it like it is). Now, Jay's lyrics are on par with his amazinng vocals. Another complaint about "Candyass" was that Orgy were nothing but a studio band, that all the magick came from their producers. "Fiction (Dreams In Digital)" probably didn't convert the ones who believe that (I did with "Candyass"), but one listen through the whole album, and you can tell that's not true. Strip away all the studio ear candy, and you still have a band that can rock like %95 of these current "bands" wish they could (Papa Roach, anyone?). Perhaps the song that stood out the most to me was "107." The dark atmosphere practically commands you step up and take notice. There are dark melodies running throughout the vein of "Vapor Transmission" from "Vapor Transmission (Intro)" to the hidden gem of a song at the end, but none so magnificently strong as "107." I really hope this song is considered for a single, because it truly deserves to be heard. Another top winner is "The Odyssey," which has some great lyrics dealing with people who run from things. As I've said before though, all of these songs are amazing and extremely catchy. The lyrics and vocals are amazing, the music is incredible and infectious, and "Vapor Transmission" has the best production since Nine Inch Nails' "The Fragile." Orgy have created a masterpiece, and "Vapor Transmission" earns its spot as one of the three best albums of the year. Very highly recommended, just don't say I didn't warn you when you can't get these songs out of your head. Personally, I like them there. A perfect album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Using past and present, Orgy have made the future of music., October 11, 2000
This review is from: Vapor Transmission (Audio CD)
I've never given an album five stars on here before, but I believe I have finally found a more than worthy CD to take that honor. Orgy's "Vapor Transmission" is an absolutely stunning accomplishment -- a wild fushion of keyboards, hard rock, creative production, and great vocals. It blows away their debut album and just about any other hard rock CD released so far this year. What makes this album -- and Orgy in general -- so effective is how they take many elements of 80's music, like synths and keyboards, and weld them to catchy late 90's metal, an approach that produces some truly epic songs here. And in an age when nearly every modern metal band has a rapper for a singer and a DJ they don't really need, Orgy stand out for creating smooth, textured music than is nonetheless aggressive without lapsing into meaningless rap shouts.

There really isn't a single dud on "Vapor Transmission". After the intro song, Orgy blast into action with "Suckerface", a heavy song with a catchy rhythm and subtle keyboards. From there, it's almost all gravy: the beatiful "Fiction", the gorgeous ballad "Eva", and the haunting "Re-creation" are among some of the best moments. All of the songs have memorable, interesting touches, and the whole thing closes out with a bang with "Where's Gerrold?", a blazing slice of perfectly executed metallic fury. Throughout the album, Orgy throw out every trick in the book to give the music maximum impact: weird vocal effects, string instruments, breakbeats, and moments of remarkable passion from singer Jay Gordon. At times, all the effects risk overwhelming the music and can seem gimmicky, but it's refreshing to see a band go too far to please the listener instead of not going far enough.

All in all, if you're a fan of Orgy's first album, modern metal in general, or even some 80's music, you'd be insane not to pick up "Vapor Transmission". Unlike most CDs, it gets better the more you listen to it instead of worse, a great rarity in these times. And if you can, see them perform live some time. They are more than capable of producing this tricky, complex music live, and they put on one of the best shows you'll ever see.

5.0 out of 5 stars Orgy have grown, lyrically and musically., October 28, 2000
This review is from: Vapor Transmission (Audio CD)
After listening to Candyass for 2 straight years, I didn't think Orgy could top it. I was wrong. Orgy go beyond their glam rock image and deliver some real hi-quality songs. There are no cover songs here, just really well written original songs. Like the title states: Orgy have grown lyrically and musically.

If you are expecting Candyass part 2, let me disappoint you. The songs on here are far more creative. Songs like "Eyes, Radio, Lies" and "Fiction (Dreams in Digital)" are the best pieced together songs and have a layered sound to them. "Opticon" and "Suckerface" are the two heaviest songs, and are also where drummer Bobby Hewitt shines his most. Upon listening to Candyass, I labeled him as a mediocre drummer, but in this CD, he proves to be one of the most talented in the band. "Eva" is a more emotional song, which I'm not sure quite what it's about, I know it's about someone Jay lost, maybe his mom or a girlfriend or someone he looked up to, but it is very well written and the timing is perfect.

This is surely the album that will establish Orgy as their own, rather than just a band associated with Korn. Orgy have finally found where they want to and need to be, musically, and lyrically.

5.0 out of 5 stars Warning: This CD can be HIGHLY addictive!, October 23, 2000

Cognitive Dissonance (the 9th Layer of Hell) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vapor Transmission (Audio CD)
I knew Orgy was worth attention when I first heard "Stitches" on the radio a couple years ago. I bought Candyass, of course, and was very satisfied with the album - it was fresh, talented music with an interesting approach to the glam rock/alternative/somewhat electronic forum. I never really expected them to become one of my favorite bands, though.

Then, Vapor Transmission caught me completely off guard. Orgy has turned to a more electronic direction (YES!!) and they have matured and grown very impressively in their short time together... There are still some rough spots on VT but they are so small I can't even compel myself to take any stars away. All the songs here (especially Eva, Opticon, and Dramatica - my faves so far) have the familiar, catchy pop feel to them, but Orgy's special talent seems to be to take these elements and make them somehow sound like nothing else you'll hear on the radio. Even though they aren't the most original act around, Orgy stands out like few bands do because they walk the line between mainstream and psychosis so well.

Also, for fellow lyricists out there (and anyone, actually), really listen to what Jay has to say in this album: His lyrics have really dug in (Standouts: Eva, about the loss of a loved one, and Re-Creation, about fakes and religion) and taken hold of some serious meaning... It can be very compelling if you let it be.

The only other thing I can tell you with certainty is the disclaimer in the subject line: Once you start listening to VT you can't stop! Beware of songs that will get stuck in your head for hours. (Opticon!)

And we make this new religion... to escape what we've become...

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent follow-up!, October 11, 2000
By
Jay Corbett (Holbrook, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vapor Transmission (Audio CD)
I never thought I'd buy it, but when I heard "Fiction" I had to get it. This album is better than I expected. Orgy are not the most original band in the world, but this album has what alot of other bands on the radio lack these days.....atmosphere. They seem to have a clear sense of what they want to sound like and are very consistent throughout. Also...these guys can actually write catchy pop songs that are somewhat intelligent, as opposed to all that other nu-metal garbage that is on the radio nowadays. "Suckerface" shows the band getting a little heavier, and the first thing you notice is that synth like guitar distortion that they always use. "The Odyssey" is a little faster with an interesting syncopated groove. "Opticon" is a perfect example of the new-wave style that they are so good at modernizing. "Fiction (Dreams in Digital)" is an extremely well written song that is a definite progression from the music on Candyass. The hook in the chorus is undeniably catchy....awesome song. "Eva" is all about sounding like The Cure at the beginning...but then it seems to become metal during the chorus. This is the best song on the record in my opinion.....the songwriting is incredible. This should be the next single. "107" shows the obvious Skinny Puppy influence. "Dramatica" and "Eyes-Radio-Lies" are well written, 80's influenced pop songs, but they have that guitar sound and incredible production that create the atmosphere and give it a unique quality depsite the obvious influences. "Saving Faces" isn't a particularly memorable track, but "Re-creation" hints at the Deftones. "Chasing Sirens" is pretty cool. Like in "The Oddysey", theres a heavy syncopated riff that is very polished and pretty heavy for Orgy. "Where's Gerrold" is another dancy track that I dont care for that much. Overall.....this album kicks a**, and is much better than Candyass. I think Jay Gordon sounds less b**chy on this album also. I find it pretty cool that a band can mix pop with heavy stuff in such a catchy way. The other cool thing about Orgy is that they dont come off like they are trying to be tough or anything. All the other "heavy" bands on the radio nowadays bite.....they are not heavy.. go buy a Meshuggah album, that is heavy defined. As far as I'm concerned, the only modern bands on the radio that count nowadays are A Perfect Circle, Radiohead, Chili Peppers and of course, Orgy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply stunning, I can't get enough, April 4, 2002
This review is from: Vapor Transmission (Audio CD)
I've had my Orgy CD's kind of set aside for the past year or so. I sort of wandered off into other music and sort of forgot about them. I popped this into my CD player the other day to listen to it, and I must say, it sounds JUST as good as it did the first day it came out. All of the songs are so seamlessly perfect. The lyrics are extremely improved and there is so much more melody than what was found in Candyass (Another great album, mind you). I feel this album sort of got the short end of the stick as far as sales go. Candyass was supported by two high played singles, whereas Vapor Transmission wasn't such a success. I'm extremely surprised mostly because the first single "Fiction (Dreams In Digital)" was easily one of the best songs of the year. It's a shame too. I'm really disappointed that not enough people gave this album it's fair chance. It really is stunning. My favorite songs are Fiction, Eva, Suckerface and Eyes/Radio/Lies. If you don't own this CD already, I suggest you go out and get it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Excellent Sci-Fi Sequel, January 11, 2006

Vapor Transmission:11/10
If you were expecting Candyass part two, think again, it is great, science fiction themed, as in the name itself, this CD is so amazing, it sat in my CD player for more than a month straight and is my 2nd most valued possession, and I don't let anyone touch it cause it is too valuable, it should cost more than $15 or 20, I will never give this away or sell it, even if I became homeless. This album definitely futuristic, as if it traveled through time. All songs are great, instant classics, great to listen straight through, it sounds great in a car radio, somehow it made gold instead of platinum.

1.Vapor Transmission 10/10 "Hihgly Recommended"
A song to the CD, it is more about preparing for actual Vapor Transmission, once the transmission starts, a beat commences, as Vapor Tranmission commences, the beat gets joined by all the guitarists, then it fades off, with a chill, as Suckerface enters the building.

2.Suckerface 11/10 "Highly Recommended"
The 3rd song I heard from this CD, has made me even more attatched to the CD, the song has an amazing beat, really futuristic melody in it, Amir metamorphoses from note to note masterfully leaving off strong futuristic trails, while accomanpanied by Ryan to enhance metal while Paige adds the techno infused riffs, while the excellent beats from Bobby completes it. The song starts off with a solo, then they all start a super neo chord for that couldn't represent the future any better. The lyrics seem to show about some spoiled person, who is such a suckerface, maybe a celebrity it sounds like.

3.The Odyssey 11/10 "Highly Recommended"
This song is an odyssey itself. One of my most favorite songs in my music life. Another futuristic track. Starts off with Bobby playing then it all starts as a very adrenalinic beat, very stimulating, the song is hard to describe though, but Orgy does the song excellent. Ryan, Paige, and Amir play a super, adrenaline, fusion chord with Bobby that sounds as a good track to play while in pursuit. The song is about starting an odyssey, trying to escape from reality and into another.

4.Opticon 10/10 "LISTEN TO THIS!"
Awesome song, but very techno, so once again hard to describe. Bobby only plays two notes in this song straight from beginning to end, it sounds super though. Jay does a great job in this song, the guitars play a very futuristic and...catchy theme in this, as Jay does an unforgettable chorus. Song is about some kind of empire called Opticon, who the world seems to depend upon in this neo world of ours, they seem to control people, you cannot escape, they are very controlling.

5.Fiction (Dreams in Digital) 10/10 "LISTEN TO THIS!"
This is an unforgettable song. More of a slower song and it is beautiful, I can remember the lyrics for this one of the top of my head. One of my favorite songs. This song has a definite climax for the chorus in this one, Jay does extrordinary in both recording and video. The guitarists hold a dark theme in this one, but as it goes in the chorus, which is hard to get out of your head. The guitarists all seem to fit perfectly with Jay's voice. The music video is also great too, it is about a beautiful female who seems to dream in digital, then eventually it shows Orgy playing on platforms that seems to have data numbers circulating around them. Just watch the damn video to understand more.

6.Eva 10/10 "Seriously Recommended"
This is a slow, emotional song. It sounds great though. This song is hard to describe, it has a bright theme in it, sort of dark though again. It is a great song, Orgy made this song to pay tributes for their music producer's late mother, Eva.

7.Dramatica 10/10 "Highly Recommended"
A dramatic song, with a nice beat, while accompanied by Paige playing low notes, adding to the background. This song has outbursts of music in it, it is quiet then it gets loud. This song almost sounds like it has chapters, Ryan and Amir add to each new part with a new sound, Jay makes the song even better.

8.107 10/10 "Recommended"
Starts with beats from Bobby, then an evil theme starts to play, Amir plays a very familiar chord, yes the chord from Revival, but only in certain parts. The song has a dark side to it, but some light. It sounds sort of mischevious, Jay and Ryan add more mishief to the track.

9.Eyes-Radio-Lies 10/10 "Highly Recommended"
Another great song, but it seems to have two parts in it, two songs mixed into one, first the "I'm the eyes in your radio" chorus part, "That's why people lie" chorus part. Then they get put together, sounding almost as dramatic as Dramatica. Amir uses the special chord from 107 and Revival in parts of this song.

10.Saving Faces 10/10 "Recommended"
Has a very dramatic chord played by Paige and Amir, very catchy. A song that I once mistaken to be in Zoolander, but thats Faces, Saving Faces and Faces sound so alike. Amir brings the chord, sometimes getting joined by Ryan to enhance it throughout the song. The song has an explosive climactic chorus, sort of, it could be louder. Great song.

11.Re-Creation 10/10 "Recommended"
Starts with Ryan playing a heavy riff, then Amir plays some strange notes that sound good, the thing that attatched me to this song. It is a nice song, I can tell the guitars are great in this song.

12.Chasing Sirens 10/10 "Recommended"
It has sort of a techno intro, that drags on for around 20 seconds. Then all the guitars and drums come in, carrying a catchy tune. It has an awesome chorus. I love this song alot, it has a great atmosphere in it.

13.Where's Gerrold 11/10 "Recommended"
This song is in the top 5 favorite Orgy songs, I love all the Orgy songs, but I can say this is one of my favorite songs in my music life. This song has an awesome beat, and amazing chords are for the chorus. Gerrold is a real person who is a friend of Orgy's who lives in Southern California, who happens to get lost a lot. The song is 10 minutes and 33 seconds long. The song is an awesome thing. Ryan helps the chorus improve greatly, accompanied by Paige and Amir, and of course, Jay.

14.The Spectrum 10/10 "Recommended"
This song may be difficult to find for some of you people, but with patience you will find it. The reward is a great song, that starts off with a knock, starts up a great tune, with Paige, then it even goes up more, to the main tune, with Amir and Ryan playing awesome chords. Jay gives signals to listeners, discovering and finding out what stuff means, is the lyrics sound like.

5.0 out of 5 stars So good!!, January 28, 2006
This review is from: Vapor Transmission (Audio CD)
This is seriously one of the best cd's I've ever purchased, in the ranks of The Cure's disintegration cd. Eva is also in my top 3 favorite songs ever, by any artist. Most of the songs are catchy, addictive, synthy, and have amazing + impassioned vocals.Trully a work of art. I disagree with the other review, this cd blows away dream theater. This is Orgy's opus..

I loved this c.d. it was awesome. I like it just as much as candyass but it is so different because candyass is a bunch of fairy tales and lies according to Jay Gordon the lead singer of Orgy and Vapor Transmission is completely true. its all about deaths of people he loved and about how friends of theirs disappeared and The five of them just having fun. I think that anybody who liked their first album and likes KoRn will like Vapor Transmission

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Techno-Rock Album Ever, August 29, 2001
By
bluedude (Pass Christian, MS) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vapor Transmission (Audio CD)
I am a huge Korn fan. I have been forever. Then, I heard that they made their own record label with new artists. I was interested. I listened to clips of Deadsy songs, which I had heard where pretty good, and I lost interest in the label. Then I saw the video for "Fiction" on TV. They said that they were on Korn's label and they were called Orgy. Immediatly, I fell in love with the song and had to buy the album. Other reasons I wanted to buy the album were because Josh Abraham, the dude who did a remix of Korn's Got the Life, is the producer of Orgy's albums and Ryan Shuck, co-writer of Korn's Blind, was part of Orgy. The final result: Orgy is amazing. They mix techno and rock better than anyone else. I purchased Orgy's Candyass as well. Both are great albums. Jay Gordon's vocals have improved VERY much on this album. It's almost too good to be true. You should definently buy this album if you want to hear the music of the future. This is what we've all been missing.
