5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous.. more people need to know about Tenhi..., December 29, 2006
This review is from: Vare (Audio CD)
...where to start! This is a band from Finland, not very well-known in the U.S. but it's about time they become more recognized here! It's difficult for me to describe this music. They have been compared with Sigur Ros, or Dead can Dance, or Tarentel. The thing is, I'm not even so crazy about those bands, but I DO love Tenhi... Tenhi has something more that I can't put my finger on. Perhaps it's like a heavier Sigur Ros.

The music is slow-paced, very atmospheric, and very melancholy. The more you listen to it, the more you hear. The moment you think the music is starting to run together or fading away, the atmosphere changes, surprising you and inviting you to listen harder. There are a number of instruments used, and different songs focus more on different instruments. There are parts that include piano, violins, or acoustic guitar. There are also parts that are heavy on flutes... and a didgeridoo(!) that remind me of some kind of depressive Cusco! (a GOOD thing!!) There is also ample use of the mouth-harp, adding that almost amusing boing-boing sound to the general melancholia, creating a very interesting musical dichotomy.

The singing (and sometimes chanting) is in Finnish; don't let that turn you off! The voice is an incredible, haunting deep male voice, and the language is beautiful. It gives me chills. In my opinion English singing would only ruin it!

Anyway... 5 stars... there are no faults here... awesome music!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremly good album, August 4, 2010

If you enjoy the mellower side of Opeth, Riverside or Porcupine Tree will will certainly dig this. There's a huge variety of instruments on display here and they all fit very well. Everything about this album is very beautiful. More people should definetly know about this band. Definetly worth buying !
