Pleasantly surprised,

As the years pass, some groups get less and less entertaining, less creative, etc. I don't have high hopes until I hear it. The funky cover of VARIETY gave me hope, however, and rightly so. Very enjoyable release. If you're unfamiliar with LRM, this may be a better way to ease into them than their early work, which is good, too, but very quirky.

Too Little Variety,
This review is from: Variety (Audio CD)
As a fan of Les Rita since the late 80's, and a owner of their entire discography, I must say that I really enjoy the quirky, off-beat character of their earlier efforts. To me, its what has set them apart as a creative duo. Now "Variety" offers very little of this quality, as the songs are accessible (perhaps too much so); I found this lack of edgy-soulfulness so apparent in their earlier works, disappointing. I unhappily agree with the 2 previous reviews that this would be a good introduction to novice listeners who may be more comfortable with a more mainstream vibe.

I have been a long-time fan of Les Rita Mitsouko, but found Variety a big surprise! This far into their career, they've created what may well be their best effort. Variety is much more down-key than their earlier work. I agree with the earlier reviewer that this album is quite a bit more accessible than much of their quirky discography. If this is the first album of theirs you hear, I would put "Terminal Beauty" and "Ding Dang Dong" in same category as much of their 80's party music. But personally, my favorite tracks on this album are "Meme Si" and "Ma Vieille Ville", both awesome ballads.
