Worth Buying Twice - I did (accidentally),

This review is from: Variable Star Quilts and How to Make Them (Dover Quilting) (Paperback)
There is nothing (currently) in the item description for "Variable Stars And How To Make Them" that would let you know it is a 1995 republication (Dover Needlework Series) of the original 1987 "A Dozen Variables" (That Patchwork Place). Had I known this (and I would have liked to have), I might not now have 2 copies of this! Hopefully my shopping experience can save you some money by recommending that you check your own book stash before ordering this.
So Why Is This (Old) Book Worth Buying (Twice) ? 1) The authors Marsha McCloskey and Nancy J. Martin are CLASSIC. I learned how to quilt back in the 80s from them. This writing duo knows how to get back to basics and pack a lot of information into one book. 2) Each of the 12 projects comes with a worksheet, partly colored, but mostly black and white, so you can play around with your own color combinations. 3) The colorways are really striking and have aged quite well since 1987. A few optional colorways are also included. 4) I come back to this book quite often when I am looking to do something with the Variable Star. I always get good ideas and great motivation. 5) The price is so reasonable - about half what I paid 24 years ago for the original! Dover Publishing is so economical that I hope they will republish many of these quilting books from the 80's. What's The Downside Of This Classic Book? 1) Templates are required for each pattern. If you are experienced in rotary cutting, you should be able to carefully measure the templates and do multiple cuts using your cutter and ruler. You will need to own a Bias Square ruler for the oddly dimensioned pieces. 2) The piecing diagrams do not show in which direction to press each seam, nor does the text. There is one very small section in the back of the book for the variable star block itself, but you are on your own for finding the best way to press for joining the blocks themselves.
