5.0 out of 5 stars If you could only have one Soldering Iron
First let me say the build quality is VERY GOOD. How very useful, . . . there is a variable heat adjustment built in giving you a choice of a low wattage iron perfect for delicate work, and a much higher wattage iron for soldering to heavy terminals, lugs and other items that seem to suck up the heat.

I use to modify my old irons by using an external dimmer...

I use to modify my old irons by using an external dimmer control, but now its built into this iron. Good quality tip also.

I use this for all of my soldering needs. I've rewired bad speakers, repaired connections in guitar and mic cables, and made a few small electronic projects for classwork. The first use, the iron will smoke a little, but it will never smoke again after the initial use. Variable Wattage was my biggest reason for choosing this iron. The tip is also great because it's thin enough to solder circuit board connections. I would definitely recommend this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Durable, comfortable and cheap, April 2, 2010

I've used it for 18 months (mostly repairs, 3-4 hours at a time) and I haven't even changed the tip. The handle warms up a bit but it's quite bearable. The _power_ adjustment works right (mind you, it's not _temperature_ regulation); you're supposed to turn it with a small flat screwdriver but my fingernail usually works.

I bought this because I had lost my 25W Weller iron and I wanted a bit of extra power ocassionally (e.g. when one of the parts is large). I'm happy with it, especially for its price.

TIP: the best way to clean the tip is a brass scouring pad. They're sold attached to a tiny base (XYTRONIC 460A SOLDERING TIP CLEANER & STAND), but you can just buy one at the supermarket and stuff it in a small can.

5.0 out of 5 stars A soldering iron perfect for RC Hobby tasks, April 20, 2010

This is very practical soldering iron for my RC cars. It heats up fast and hot and has a small perfect tip. So far it is the only soldering iron I've found that works well for soldering battery terminal connections.

I bought this, because I thought it would be useful for hobby electronics. I had 2 non-variable watt irons already. I've used this one 2x.

From the back of the blister pack (card): "When the soldering iron is plugged in for the first time, there comes out a smoke from the tip end. The smoke stops in a short while and smoke never comes out again."

Both times I've used it so far, it has smoked. Not just from the end of the handle nearest the tip, but from the back of it too (the handle seems to be hollow all the way through).

The handle also has gotten hot. However the tip hasn't. I had to set it to 7 the first time I used it, and even then, had to hold the tip to the parts being soldered for a bit before the solder would start to melt on to them.

I don't remember any of my other soldering irons, or any I've used act this way either, but it's been years since I soldered on a regular basis.

It's possible I got a bad unit, but I'm not very happy with it. It should get me by until I can get a Weller station, and if not, I've got 2 non-variable ones I can use instead.

1.0 out of 5 stars You idiots sent me solder, not a soldering iron, April 11, 2011

You idiots sent me solder, not a soldering iron. The label on the package even said it was a soldering iron, and someone had even written on the label that it was the wrong product (mislabeled). I can't even imagine anyone could mistake solder for a soldering iron. DUH!!!

The title of this review pretty much sums it up. It did not work at all. I had to ship it back to Amazon and wait a few weeks for a refund (they won't ship you a replacement, just refund your money). It was a waste of time all around.

Also, the dial to adjust the heat was ridiculously hard to move. You definitely would have to use a flat screwdriver because your hand or even your fingernail isn't going to cut it.
