Product Description

Variac is a variable transformer and a great device for quality control testing, equipment testing on low and high voltage, control over heat, speed, and more.

However in order to purchase the right variac, it is critical that you know the amp usage by your electronic device. It is always best to be conservative otherwise you risk destroying the variac and it can be very dangerous. For example, if your device requires 5 amp, buy the variac with up to 10 amp. A rating of 300VA means that at 100volt, the unit can sustain at maximum 3amp. If at 120 volt the unit can sustain at 2.5amp

Note - Indoor use only. Do not operate in a condition that may cause electrocution and fire. Do not operate in a wet environment. Do not operate near flammable substance.

i've been using fan speed controllers for noise control by trying to throttle down the speed maybe 30% and all of the "speedster" style controllers cause the fan to hum. the hum isn't loud but loud enough that you get this feeling that the fan doesn't like it... i know that not giving the proper sine wave along with the voltage is not good for motors so i bought one of these variac units. sure it was about the cost of two speedster controllers; but i can throttle down the fan with ZERO hum!!! the resolution of speed range is really nice and the volt meter lets you know where your at electrically speaking... i will recommend these for my indoor growing clients and greenhouse people that want a quality speed controller....
update; i am now ordering a second for a second fan... this is a really great rig for speed control without hum... none of my clients seem to grasp the idea of throttling down a fan with no hum no matter how many times i tell them about this but that is their noisy problem, not mine...

I have two of these controllers/transformers and I feel that they are a well functioning, smooth running product for my need. I've not had a problem with either unit and these babies are used a lot. So far, so good.

Both units have been running with inline fans 24/7. The sensitive incremental adjustment is outstanding. This has been a good purchase. Very happy.

A nice light duty variac. Mine arrived with a two outer case dents along the backside slots. I placed a digital volt meter on the output and found the dial scale to be off about -5 to -7 volts. Unit works as advertised and arrived in a reasonable ship time. My use for this light duty variac is to slowly bring back to life several old tube type table radios. Wish me luck! -Lloyd

First, I bought a ventech 4" inline fan combo for a 3x3 tent. When I hung it and turned on, it was way too strong for this size area. I thought at first was my only option was adding a speedster type fan controller. Just by the reviews for those you can tell they're not really made to work properly for inline fans. I'm so glad I stumbled on this item because when I hooked it up it worked perfectly. I slowly dialed it from slow speed up and at first I couldn't tell the fan was on until I felt the air coming out. I settled on a speed that I can tell is moving enough air in and out and I still can barely hear the fan. No motor hum, just smooth running. This is the best speed control device for inline fans.

So far it works excellently for this type of motor.(cannot be slowed properly with pulse width modulation)

Will update if the product lasts a long time.

Years ago I would buy a piece of used gear - maybe even from a friend - and very possibly be disappointed that it smoked the first or third time I turned it on.

Then I found out why (after several honorable folks looked at me with a frown but no answer - since they'd told me when they'd stopped using it months or years before "It was Fine.") I was having a problem.

Power Capacitors in all equipment stored for long periods drain down 'till they're "dead" and when the wall current hits them like a ton-of-bricks they go bad... same reason if your car battery is totally dead you need to charge it overnight to keep it like-new - rather than a 10 minute "quick-charge'... very bad for your battery.

Well, decades ago I finally learned and I've had vari-ac's ever since. This is the one I buy for my friends to keep their equipment happy. They always love it - so I'm happy............/
