A More Raw Paulson,
By Kyte (Cary/NC/USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Variations (Audio CD)
I picked up "Variations" after devouring Paulson's second LP "All At Once." This record, while amazing in it's own right, I think is a little over-shadowed by the bands follow up record. "Variations" starts of with an instrumental piece that gives a sense of a great build up, but to me it seems to not deliver on that end as if the whole song is build up. But then the album really kicks in with "A Great Pretending," a tune with somewhat somber verses (but listen to their drummer!) and a really driving chorus. The next two songs "Convertible" and "Nightfall" keep the pace going. The middle of the album is a bit slow to me and doesn't pick up to the same level as the earlier songs until "Feast Or Famine" and the closing track "Convertible (reprise)."

This is the first review I've written that didn't make me wish for a 4.5. Without a second thought, I give this album 5/5 stars. If you do not own it, buy it. This is what music should be. This band owns 90% of all modern bands. Buy this.

Awful,

Just so painful in comparison to the genius that is "All at Once". I had never heard of Paulson until I heard "Window Frames" on Pandora. After getting a hold of a number of songs across multiple albums, I found myself wondering if this album was the same Paulson! I thought maybe they were two different bands! The songwriting is like night and day. Whatever happened between this album and "All at Once", this was the rehearsal. All at Once is the symphony.I would recommend downloading "Nightfall" where you can find it. Otherwise get yourself a copy of their new album.

Paulson is swell,

These guys seem like a more underground Dredge. They also remind me of Thursday. This cd is on Initial Records. Initial Records is out of Louisville, Kentucky, how lucky.
