The emergent picture, more subtle, varied, and vibrant than traditional black Christian denominational history, marks a new era in African American religious studies.

Anthony B. Pinn is Assistant Professor of Religion at Macalester College, St. Paul, Minnesota. He earned his Ph.D. at Harvard Divinity School and is author of Why Lord? Suffering and Evil in Black Theology (1995).
