Pretty Tasty Stuff!, November 21, 2005
This review is from: Variety Orchestra (Audio CD)
A progressive big band discovery akin to Either Orchestra, Rich Woodson, New Pulse Jazz Band or Baird Hersey's Year of the Ear. I could do without the pedal steel in the earlier tracks and the vocals in the later, but overall it's pretty tasty stuff and marvelously played throughout. It is informed by a lot of influences -- from Impulse jazz to mariachi to Ennio Morricone to Charles Mingus -- and doesn't take itself too seriously.

Intricate, Innovative Good to Excellent Music!, September 27, 2009
This review is from: Variety Orchestra (Audio CD)
Sometimes with ReR records, the music can be so inaccessible...
This is NOT the case with the Variety Orchestra. However this is complex music (compare to Alex K. Redferne & The Eyesores, Frank Zappa (Studio Tan period) Bela Fleck and the Flecktones (late 1980's)...
I don't think he made any other releases with this line up. That is a shame because there are many a hot player on this disc. A worthy spin!
