4.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical holiday music LP October 16, 2013
RHINO Records had its origin in a popular West-L.A. vinyl shop (founded 1973). The label started operation four years later with the eccentric Wild Man Fischer as their first artist. RHINO has enjoyed much success over the years with a catalog of oldies plus a diverse stable of musicians.

RHINO's various artists collection COOL YULE: A Collection of Rockin' Stocking Stuffers (RNLP/RNC 073) was issued in 1986.

RANDOM NOTES
--Paul (Ray Hildebrand) and Paula (Jill Jackson) met at Howard Payne College in Brownwood, TX. They recorded "Hey Paula" after singing it on the air during a charity fundraiser.
--Marvin Gaye was 2nd tenor in the Marquees, a short-lived doo wop group that evolved from the Rainbows (of Washington DC).
--The Surfaris were high school kids when "Wipe Out" became a local hit in L.A. It was a national #2 the next summer.
--Solomon Burke, one of the founders of soul music, was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2001.
--Jack Scott channels Elvis on "There's Trouble Brewin'," a raucous 1963 song about a guy who's jealous of Santa.
-- Edd "Kookie" Byrnes appeared in the film GREASE (1978) as a TV dance show host.
--In 1960, Clarence Carter received a Bachelor of Science degree for music from the Alabama School for the Blind in Talladega, AL.
--Bud Logan played bass and sang backing vocals in the last version of Jim Reeves' Blues Boys touring band. After Reeves and pianist Dean Manuel died in a 1964 small plane crash, the group continued performing until 1968.

Includes release dates, plus peak Billboard Hot 100 and R&B chart positions (where applicable).

Cool Yule is a classic compilation by Rhino of Christmas songs by pop and R&B artists of the late 50s and early 60s. It appeared on vinyl in 1986 and later on CD. There is a nice variety in the songs some of which are straight pop like Holiday Hootenanny or Sock It To Me Santa or off the wall fun like Yulesville or the non PC Christmas in the Congo. The majority however are straight ahead R&B songs very well done. These are all originals no covers. Many would be difficult to find on the original 45s so it is a nice public service for Rhino to collect them on one platter. Cool man.
