3.0 out of 5 stars I think it's more of a book for teenagers and young adults
I thought the book was writing well. I feel that book is intened for the younger audiance. I feel that if an older adult read this book they wouldn't enjoy the book. But as a younger adult I enjoyed the book a great deal and reconmend it for younger adults ages 14-19.

Varsity Blues

The story takes place in West Canaan, Texas where football is a way of life and to win at all cost. Coach Kilmer is a tough and hard coach who expects nothing but perfection from his players. Lance is his number one quarterback who hurts his knee and doesn't get to play the remaining games. So Jonathan Mox takes over as quarterback for the team. He realizes along with all the team how hard Coach Kilmer is and that he only cared for himself. He did nothing to help out any player but Lance with colleges. He makes Billy Bob feel bad and blames him for Lance getting hurt and not playing. Mox gets a scholarship to Brown University and is excited. Kilmer threatens Mox and tells him that he will mess with his transcripts and blow the whole deal with Brown unless he plays by his rules. At the biggest game of the year Kilmer tells Mox to remember what he said. Kilmer was calling all the plays but during halftime Kilmer and the team get into an argument and they tell him they will not play if he is out there on the sidelines. So Mox and the team decide that they want to win for themselves without Kilmer. Lance coaches the team from the sidelines and they play a great game. The Coyotes win their last game with pride and without Kilmer.

The main character was Jonathan Mox. He was Lance's best friend and was second string on the football team. He really didn't care much about football and was only playing because it made his dad happy. He was more into studying and getting into Brown University. It wasn't until he had to play that he really liked the game and the fame for awhile. But then he realized that wasn't what he wanted. He wanted his girlfriend back and that he wanted to go to Brown University more than playing football. He wasn't out there to play for Kilmer but for himself and his teammates.

What I liked best was the way the team was together and stood by each other. They stuck up for each other when Kilmer was getting on them and yelling at them. They worried about Billy Bob's health. Mox didn't take advantage of Lance's girlfriend when she threw herself at him. They were all real good friends and would do anything for each other. They would never let each other down. When it came right down to it they were there for each other.

What I didn't like was when Coach Kilmer yelled at Billy Bob and called him a crybaby. He also called him fat. Billy Bob is a very emotional guy and takes things to heart. This was a rotten way for a coach to treat a player or anyone.

I would recommend this book to anyone my age and any athlete. It is a very good book to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars SImply Marvelous, November 12, 2002

This review is from: Varsity Blues (Paperback)
I thought this book did an accurate job of portraying the life of a high school football team. It showed the pressure, as we all the glory of being a part of a national powerhouse football program. It was a book with action, adventure, drama and a little romance. All of these things put together made for one excellent book. It was well written and descriptive. The football game scenes in particular made you feel like you were at the game. I enjoyed this book thoroughly and give it my full endorsement.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good book if you are in to football., October 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Varsity Blues (Paperback)
Varsity Blues takes place in West Canaan, a town run on nothing but football.Coach Kilmers Coyotes are the gods of Friday night. But what if the star quarterback gets injured? This is a great book for any teenager who likes football. It might even be a good book if you don't like football but just like teenage life. I think that you will really enjoy this book.

I loved this book! If you've seen the movie, and liked it, than you have to read the book. It has added scenes, better descriptions, and eight pages of color photos.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a book about a boy who gets his chance to be qb, February 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Varsity Blues (Paperback)
This book is a book about Mox, a teenage boy who is the alternative QB. After the quarter back is injured Mox plays and shows the coach that he can play. The coach doesn't respect him still. I think this book is a book that a lot of teenagers can relate to.

This book was great! It was so much like the movie. I love how you can see the movie and then read the book and remember parts when you've forgotten them and can't go back to see the movie again. I suggest this book to EVERYONE. Who has or has not seen the movie.
