3.0 out of 5 stars A "Vedic Hindu Civilization" view of Indian culture, January 13, 2003
By
"ysaeed" (New Delhi, India) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vasantotsava: The Spring Festivals of India : Texts and Traditions (Reconstructing Indian History & Culture) (Hardcover)
Brilliantly researched book about the Spring festivals of India, excellent references and footnotes, but views Indian culture only as the one that existed in the so-called "Vedic" times. The book completely ignores the "non-Hindu" cultural traditions of Basant or Vasantotsava, for instance the Sufi/Muslim traditions. The dargahs (tombs) of Chishti sufi saints in India and Pakistan may be the only places today where Basant festivals are celebrated, but the book does not mention anything about them. The most colourful Basant today is celebrated in Lahore, Pakistan, which the book overlooks. This is basically an extremely esoteric view of the Vedic Hindu culture based primarily on the ancient Sanskrit treatise.
