Children sensitive to laundry detergent? Try chemical-free Vaska!,
By
This review is from: Vaska 48-Ounce Lavender Laundry Detergent, 3.5-Pound Bottles (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
My wife used Tide exclusively for her front-loading washing machine. However, the Amazon Vine offer to try Vaska Lavender Laundry detergent was too good to pass up. We have one son who suffers from allergies; he is sensitive to heavily-perfumed detergents and cleaners.
We're more than halfway through the 48-ounce bottle and can see, smell -- AND FEEL -- a big difference in our laundry. The laundry is much softer. We've tried whites, colors and heavy loads of bath towels. Each comes out clean with a mild lavender scent and, most importantly, softer than Tide loads. (NOTE: We have a high efficiency washing machine, so we only use a cap full for each load.) How much do we like Vaska? We placed an Amazon order for six more bottles. That may seem like a lot to spend on laundry detergent but the order works out to less than 29 cents per load, which is competitive with other laundry detergent brands. We didn't pick the scent-free version as the lavender was pleasing without being cloying (our son reports no problems with the new detergent). In summary, we give Vaska a five-star rating and recommend it to families with children sensitive to the chemicals in other laundry detergents.

I bought a case of Vaska on a recommendation of a friend and I haven't been disappointed. The first thing you notice with this product is its pleasing smell. The lavender scent is clean and not overwhelming. As far as the cleaning power, its great! I've been using it for several months now and I couldn't be happier with Vaska. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking for a high quality, environmentally friendly detergent.

The first, and most obvious, question to ask about a revolutionary new detergent formula is: does it get the job done? The answer, based on my experience after several washes, is a definitive "yes!" Vaska's detergent formula really does manage to clean my family's clothing - and with active children in my household we do put a lot of wear on our wearables. I haven't had a chance to really test it on various stain types, but for clothing with normal wear I've been very happy with the results. Plus, I really like the scent - the lavender aroma is very nice and fresh, and not overpowering. Part of that seems to be due to the fact that the scent is not there to overcome an underlying chemical smell. The active ingredients in this formula are botanical and non-toxic.
One thing I really like about this formula, especially given that my kids are starting to do laundry, is that it really is not made up of what are essentially hazardous chemicals that make up other detergents. I was pleased to note in the safety instructions that if this detergent is accidentally ingested one should drink plenty of water to dilute it. All of our other detergents warn that one should drink milk and then see a physician immediately! I also really like the fact that this formula is made of non-pollutants. Detergents do get into the water supply and end up in rivers and streams and in the ocean - and I am impressed that this formula will not add undue harm to the environment as this happens. There is no chlorine, no dyes, no phosphates or alcohol and no animal products in here. I'm very impressed with what Vaska has done, and hope that this represents a new trend in household products. I'm looking forward to trying their non-chlorine bleach, but I'm impressed by what I've seen so far and expect to keep using Vaska.

I have a front loading Maytag Neptune machine that takes HE detergent. I have been using Seventh Generation products since I first bought the machine 5 years ago to do the linens from my massage therapy practice. I wanted to keep my practice "green" while taking care of the special needs of my patients with chemical sensitivities as well as sanitizing my linens and getting them really clean of my massage oils and creams. I was always very happy with the Seventh Generation line and kept using it for my personal laundry even after I was disabled and had to give up my massage practice. I've had no complaints whatsoever.
When I had the opportunity to try Vaska Lavender Laundry Detergent for review, I was very excited. I thought it would be fun to compare a new product with my old faithful...and it was! I'm happy to report extraordinary results. Vaska Lavender Laundry Detergent is indeed and exceptional botanical product. First of all, I absolutely adore the lavender! As an aromatherapist, lavender is high on my list of essentials. I use it whenever I can. The scent of Vaska is delightful ~ light, fresh and true. It does not smell perfumey so it is acceptable for even the laundry needs of the males in your home. My bed linens smell divine! I've always rubbed a little lavender essential oil onto my bedding to induce more restful sleep anyway and it's very nice to have the fresh and healing fragrance of lavender from this laundry detergent linger. Furthermore, I myself have chemical sensitivities and Vaska left no chemical residues that would normally cause me skin irritation and headache. Secondly and perhaps more importantly, Vaska is truly high performance. I've done several multi-colored loads to test and not one color has faded or run. My whites came out bright and white. I had some fairly soiled clothes from a small gardening project and I'm thrilled to report that everything, including my socks with ground-in dirt, came clean. I couldn't be more satisfied with the results of my comparison. Lastly, Vaska does not contain animal products, NPEs, chlorine, phosphates, alcohol,EPA pollutants or dyes. And it is made in the good old USA!!! My conclusion: Vaska is much more expensive than Seventh Generation and dollar for dollar I'm not sure if I'll be switching to Vaska...but I would like to if the price comes down.

Pleasant smell without being overpowering,
This review is from: Vaska 48-Ounce Lavender Laundry Detergent, 3.5-Pound Bottles (Pack of 6) (Health and Beauty)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I was excited to try out a bottle of this laundry detergent. Loving to clean (OCD) and also being a fan of the scent of lavender for years this was well suited for me. I read in my early 20's lavender is very relaxing and calming and usually burn pure lavender oil. When I received this bottle I was pleased with the design of it. It stands out, it is attractive. When I first smelled it I figured it might be overpowering for the wash but it wasn't. I have done several loads of laundry with it and it smells great during the wash and after it has a very faint lavender scent that goes away when the clothes are dried. The one thing I was impressed with was how clean all the clothes smell. They were not heavily scented in lavender but have a very fresh/clean scent to them! I was skeptical because each load I ran I would open the washer and did not notice any bubbles and thought to myself how is this going to clean but it does!
When buying laundry detergent I look for the scent, color, and price. Scent wise Vaska has it hands down. Color I prefer it be clear or light. Reason for that is I like to wash most of my linens/garments in cold water and many times darker colored detergents just stain the clothes. Price wise I thing it is a bit higher than I would usually pay but seeing how it goes a long way I think it is comparable to the other detergents I get at my local discount stores. I have washed several loads and everything smells so clean and fresh. I also tested the detergent on my under garments in the delicate cycle and was very impressed! I have had allergies/irritants to other detergents but not to Vaska. I have looked at the other items Vaska sells on Amazon and saw liquid fabric softener but wish they sold dryer sheet. If they made them in this scent I would happily buy them. Lastly, I like that the product is made in the USA and also that they use advanced botanical ingredients that are suited for all washers including HE (high efficiency). I have a standard washer but my mother uses a HE and was interested after smelling it and seeing the HE on the bottle. The bottle is also made with 50% recycled materials which as a consumer I look for. When I am finished with the bottle I will be recycling it myself. Price aside I cannot think of one negative thing about this detergent. But then again I am someone of a `clean freak' but with that I think I might be pickier than others. I would highly recommend this and was very happy to try it out.

I hate the "Green" movement. I hate the movement because of its self-righteous sanctimonious, guilt-trip laying ideology with not a little smattering of hubris ("we're saving THE EARTH!").
Here's the thing: I don't disagree with the goals of the movement--after all, I want to leave a better, cleaner world for my son. Who doesn't? Even so, in my experience, products claiming to be "green" don't perform up to the standards of their "un-Green" competitors. Vaska's `herbatergent' was beginning to look a lot like the usual tripe ('herbatergent,' really?) but you can consider this skeptic converted. Vaska--which means "to wash" in "Old Norse" according to their website--has succeeded in performing a small modern miracle: their product works as advertised! While lavendar is not one of my favorites scents, the detergent--excuse me, herbatergent--got rid of the gunk and spit-up on bibs and other assorted clothing associated with feeding a refluxing baby. Yes, it's good enough to remove dried-on dirt yet gentle enough not to cause problems for baby's skin. In the end, that's all it boils down to: making a product that works. If in the process, you happen to make a product from natural sources that (a) don't harm the environment; (b) are safe for people's use all while not preaching, I will buy everything you make. Kudos to Vaska.

We first found Vaska on clearance at Target. The smell is nice, and it works well. My wife is sensitive to a lot of things, but this doesn't irritate her skin at all. Target didn't carry this anymore, so we went to Amazon... as much as I didn't want to turn into one of those people who buy bulk packs of daily consumables online, this is a pretty good deal, and I don't have to remember to pick up detergent for the next nine months. Plus, I don't think I've ever gotten such a good deal on super saver shipping. Could you imagine how much it must cost to ship six 3.5 pound bottles of soap?

The fact that I'm purchasing this online (because it's no longer available locally) proves just how much I love this detergent. I don't want to use anything else ever again. It's simple, cleans just fine, and smells wonderful. Trying out Amazon's subscription service for the first time with this. It will be nice to know it's coming so I can stop trying to hunt it down.

The first thing I noticed was how watery and clear the detergent was. Not concetrated. But Vaska has a nice Lavender scent. And the reason for the lack of thick consistency is the lack of chemicals. Not only does this product clean well, it's completely safe around children and pets. Reading the label, it says that if it's ingested, just drink a lot of water to dilute. All-natural, cleans just as well as any other product that I've tried, and completely safe of harsh chemicals - I love this detergent!

Vaska 48-Ounce Lavender Laundry Detergent isn't very heavy on the "Lavender" fragrance. It would be better named "Light Lavender" scented in my opinion. I would prefer more of a fragrance left in the clothes when they are dried as I do not use any fabric softeners due to skin sensitivity issues that my kids have. However it cleans as well as my regular laundry detergents like Arm & Hammer, Purex, Gain or whatever is on sale. IF you (like me) cannot afford to go GREEN (all these good things just cost more!!) BUT you want your clothing free of all the chemical additives in your laundry soaps, just set your washer on an extra rinse cycle & add some white vinegar! it will effectively remove them & most traces of any residual soap build up in the fabric!
Overall this is a good laundry detergent, I just would prefer more fragrance. |
