5.0 out of 5 stars Unusually comfortable day hiking/light backpacking boot
The Vasque Wasatch lives up to its reputation for unusual out of the box comfort. I took a brand new pair on a hard hike and rock scramble last weekend with no blisters or other problems.

The boots also managed to stay completely dry even though recent rains had transformed the trails into small brooks.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very durable, stiff and heavy. Yesterday's method of backpacking.
I purchased these for a trip to the High Sierras.

They say a pound on your foot = 6 lbs on your back.

These really slow me down.

Maybe back in the day they were good but now less is more.

For backpacking, I would read about the new fad in ultra light backpacking wher you were sneakers or trail running shoes and do...

The Vasque Wasatch lives up to its reputation for unusual out of the box comfort. I took a brand new pair on a hard hike and rock scramble last weekend with no blisters or other problems.

The boots also managed to stay completely dry even though recent rains had transformed the trails into small brooks.

Be aware that the Wasatch is a little on the heavy side for a day hiker. On the plus side, that heaviness translates into superior ankle support. The quality of the leather uppers appears to be a big step up over boots costing a little less. Also appreciated is the fact that the soles are softer and stick better on bare rock than is usual for a heavier boot.

The claim that the boot runs true to size is probably correct, but also a little bit odd because no one will buy these to wear with thin dress socks on sidewalks. Thick hiking socks will add roughly one-half size, and a hiking boot should also be sized with extra space at the toe. The bottom line is that my size (United States) in a dress shoe is 10.5 wide, while my best fit in the Vasque Wasatch was 11.5 medium.

5.0 out of 5 stars Working boot, February 9, 2009
This review is from: Vasque Women's Wasatch GTX Hiking Boot (Apparel)
Bought this boot four years ago. Have gone through one pair laces and just bought new innersoles for them. They wear like iron, just need occasional water proofing. They are my work boots---lawn moving, garden work, and everything else outdoors. They are worn at least eight hours a day in the growing season. Whenever these wear out, will definitely buy another pair just like them.

I bought this boot in my usual boot size (1/2 larger than dress shoe) in a wide. I'm wearing this boot everyday to support a broken second metatarsal. It's comfortable and supportive. It has a generous toe box, but my feet do not slide forward in the boot when going downhill. I've only been out on short (3mile) easy hikes, so far, fit and comfort are great. Looking forward to more rigorous terrain once my foot heals. Very short break in period (first week I only wore 2-3 hours a day at work), now I wear all day. I usually wear with smartwool trek or tholo socks but these boots are also comfortable with thinner socks.

Update 12-25-09. Survived Kansas blizzard in these boots. After 2.5 hours out in snow feet are warm and dry. Awesome.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally found my match!!!, April 3, 2010

Just finished a two day, first of the season backpacking trip. Wore these boots for the first time. After owning too many pairs of boots that rubbed at the back, sides and toes, I was determined to purchase a pair of narrow-width boots. I was concerned that they may be a little heavy and not as breathable as I would like for summer backpacking. I wore a sock liner and Smart Wool Socks. Perfect comfort! I have narrow feet (usually wear a AA in shoes), and I've always had trouble (blisters!) sloshing around in regular width hiking boots. Awesome for those of us who try to get by with wider-than-our-feet boots.

I just bought my fifth pair of these boots, but this is the first pair I've bought from Amazon. I hike 10 hours a day on my job as an arborist and go through boots fast, but these have been comfortable and waterproof in all but the wettest situations. However, this latest pair I bought feels a size too big. I double checked and it's the same size and width as I've always purchased. They feel sloppy and I have to wear thick socks with them, which I don't like to do in our California climate. Otherwise, I love the boots. I wore them trekking in Nepal (twice), and my feet stayed dry while my companions' boots got soaked. I've never had to break them in; they're comfortable from the first outing.

5.0 out of 5 stars nothing to complain, January 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this for my wife. She loves it a lot. We did a test on its waterproof ability. When soaking the shoe in water, the only way water can get in is to flow in from top. No permeation at all! Rubber boots can do the same thing of course. But the fantastic part is this one can ventilate your feet while keeping water outside. Best thing to wear when walking in snow. 4 inches deep snow is not a problem any more. I like the outsole too. It has good contact with ground while removing excess snow sticking under by itself.
It becomes standard equipment for my wife now during snow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Hiking Boot, November 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
These boots are the first pair of hiking boots I have ever purchased. I did a lot of research due to the fact I was told of the importance of choosing just the right boot for my feet. I tried on other boots at department stores that specialized in hiking boots. These offered the most comfort and durability including toe area and support for my ankle and foot. I also wore "Smart Wool" socks with the most padding. They were designed for hunting. That also helped with the comfort and wear of my boots.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Them!, August 22, 2010

I love these boots! Upon the first wearing, I hiked 5 miles (with some good Smartwool socks) and my feet were happy the whole time. I highly recommend these boots for the ankle support and general sturdiness on rough terraine. ....and did I mention they look terrific?!!!! Oh yeah, the hike invlolved some rock hopping below a waterfall; I never slipped and my feet were completely dry!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Love Vasques., October 19, 2009

This is my second pair of vasques and I love them. I am extremely hard on shoes and my first pair lasted about 7 years and are completely shot right now. The only thing that I was disappointed in is the ad says to buy a half size larger. In which I did to find that they were completely too big. I wear a 10.5, and ended up sending the 11s back and getting a size 10 instead (due to availability). Even with smartwool socks I have no problems with the 10. My experience only.

For backpacking, I would read about the new fad in ultra light backpacking wher you were sneakers or trail running shoes and do not have any pain after days on the trail.

Many backpackers have sworn off leather hiking boots, and after wearing these, I am also on that list.

These will help enable you to carry 60 pounds on your back if that is your thing.
I am sure there will be pain.
