Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Charley is a cyborg vampire killer (in both senses—he's trying to kill them, and he is one) in thrall to his sybaritic vampire master named Johnny. They have a love-hate relationship: Charley works for the Vatican as a kind of supernatural assassin and only feeds on Johnny; Johnny torments Charley and even seduces him, but seems to be okay with following him around when needed. The figures can be attractive, but the storytelling is severely lacking. What happens can be hard to puzzle out, especially during battles. The result is a confusing mishmash of vampires, homoeroticism, and cross and communion imagery. In many manga stories, vampirism is code for forbidden sex. That's true here, where the appeal rests on the idea of two men sucking on each other even when they say they don't want to. Fans of gothic boys' love stories will be willing to puzzle through for the occasional double entendre or erotic image, while others may draw the line at the use of actual Christian elements, like the Lord 's Prayer, in such a work. 5.0 out of 5 stars A welcome surprise., July 18, 2008
By
This review is from: Vassalord Volume 1 (Paperback)
I'll be honest and say that I had not even heard about this title until I saw it here and bought it solely based on the beautiful cover. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the story and will continue to collect. If you like vampire stories, then this is for you. The BL elements of the story are not over the top (merely implied, as with any vampire scenario), but do add humor and make the dialogue a lot more sexy. So far, I do not perceive a definite plot, instead the chapters are episodic and interesting by themselves. Beautiful art and attention grabbing, imaginative situations make this a must have.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Guilty Pleasure, July 24, 2008
This review is from: Vassalord Volume 1 (Paperback)
This is as far deviated from Nanae Chrono's Peace Maker series as you could imagine. It was the mangaka's name attached to it that made me look twice, plus it's a vampire story....what's not to like. Then once I saw some of the artwork I had to order it. That said, Vassalord is like a guilty pleasure to me. I'm not sure how much substance it will have, but it has a LOT of style. It's certainly worth a look. I'll definitely be ordering volume 2.

4.0 out of 5 stars Funny and worth reading!!!, August 20, 2008
This review is from: Vassalord Volume 1 (Paperback)
Honestly, initially i wasnot sure whether i should buy it in the first place though i have seen the anime Peace maker. Could Vassalord be consider as yaoi? i seldom buy yaoi manga with the exception of seeing anime fake and gravitation. This manga is certainly worth the buy and has good story line and art work!!! Im sure to look out for the next volume!
