4.0 out of 5 stars Sinaisky and the World of Rimsky-Korsakov, April 15, 2011

This review is from: Vassily Sinaisky Conducts Rimsky-Korsakov (Audio CD)
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844 - 1908) once enjoyed popularity in the concert halls where his works frequently graced programs of lighter veined music - Capriccio Espagnol, the Russian Easter Festival Overture and Scheherazade. Some of his operas are still produced, especially his re-setting of Mussorgsky's 'Boris Godunov', but otherwise we hear little of this composer. In this excellent recording Russian conductor Vassily Sinaisky and the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra reminds us of the Orientalism and magic that were Rimsky-Korsakov's signature.

Included here are overtures to 'The Maid of Pskov', 'The Tsar's Bride', a surprising addition of the famous 'Neapolitan Song' (yes, Funiculi funicula!), a strange work rarely heard called 'Legend (Skazka)', a sweeping little piece 'Sinfonietta on Russian Themes', and ending with the ever-popular 'Capriccio Espagnol'. Sinaisky's attention to inner voices and instrumental detail makes these performances stand out above others and this recording will restore interest in a composer whose fame appear to be fading. It is a fine sampler of excellent orchestral fare. Grady Harp, April 11
