Book Description

When the Curiosity rover uncovers a human skull buried beneath the surface of Mars, humankind is faced with one of the most challenging and troubling enigmas it has ever encountered. The brilliant but arrogant physicist James Carpenter is put in charge of the investigation and will stop at nothing to find the truth. However, pitfalls abound because in the universe of Vastitas, nothing is what it seems and the very logic of space and time is questioned.

Two hundred years in the future, astronaut Daniel Novikov has his own problems to deal with. After a worldwide conspiracy leaves the human race struggling to survive, Daniel comes to the realization that only he has the knowledge needed to avert disaster. But no amount of experience could have prepared him for what he encounters in outer space.

The two men, separated by hundreds of years, race against the clock in this engaging sci-fi thriller that challenges us to ask ourselves two questions:

Who are we and what are we doing here?

2.0 out of 5 stars Lame. "Scientific Government" vs July 22, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Lame. "Scientific Government" vs. "Political Government". The author has obviously never had the pleasure of attending a faculty meeting in a scientific department. The notion that scientists could run a government objectively on purely technical criteria is beyond laughable. As for the plot and wriiting, strictly pedestrian.

“Vastitas” is a science fiction suspense novel set in two futures—the near future and the far future—and how they eventually twist together results in an exciting, intelligent read.

James Carpenter is a young multimillionaire physicist and genius, and when a rover on Mars discovers a human skeleton and an odd metallic disc, he becomes consumed with decrypting the information and understanding how human bones came to be preserved on the desolate planet.

Daniel Novikov is an astronaut in a future where time travel has been attained, but where water is so precious that war breaks out over its scarcity—and when one of his missions goes fatally awry, he becomes determined to atone for it somehow. How the two stories are linked in “Vastitas” is the joy of the novel (or at least it was for this reader!).

I find science fiction books that delve too far into the “science” part a little dull, but what I liked about “Vastitas” is that the science is interesting and convincing without being overly detailed or slowing the story down. In fact, it’s an integral part of the story and the plot, which you begin to see as the book progresses. I also enjoyed that at its heart the novel was a very human story with flawed and interesting characters. James is a little too cold and driven by his passion for work, but nonetheless is admirable and impressive; Daniel is warmer but brave and intelligent, with personal problems as painful in the far future as they are today. The ending has an exciting element of surprise that seamlessly brings everything together, and the book is well-written and plotted.

I would recommend “Vastitas” to readers who enjoy science fiction novels, especially those dealing with time travel, space, and the future of humankind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling and philosophical June 25, 2014

Vastitas is a short but thrilling science fiction novel that approaches some interesting questions about humanity and what lies beyond. After a confusing discovery is made on Mars, an investigation is launched that will change the face of the human experience forever.

Vastitas employs the dual-storyline style and bounces between Carpenter and Novikov's respective new and mystifying situations, each lending insight into the world as a whole. Bittar's writing style is lucid and explanatory without being overly expository - the action and dialogue do the mass of the storytelling, which is how it should be.

If you're a fan of classic thought-provoking sci-fi like that of Heinlein, Wells and Philip K. Dick, you'll enjoy this deep and interesting novella.
