While probably not as well-known as other types of saws, Japanese flush cut saws are very useful tools.

Have you ever tried cutting wood with a utility knife? I'm not talking about something easy like shims; I mean an actual piece of wood, like say a 3/4" x 2" piece of pine. It seems like it should work, right? You can easily score it a good 1/8" deep with a few passes, but then your progress starts to slow. You have two problems here: first, the cutting edge is basically shaped like a V, so the sharp part actually cutting the wood is eventually getting inhibited by the flat edge of the blade (friction and science and whatnot); second, there is only one "tooth" to your utility knife saw. Think of this type of saw as dozens of razor blade teeth that are all flush with the flat edge of the saw.

These saws have two things going for them that stand out from other saws.
1. You can get incredibly fine cuts. The kerf - the part of the material that is removed and turned into sawdust - is very thin with this saw. The blade is literally as thick as a couple of pieces of copy paper.
2. The thin blade also makes it very flexible, which is a big benefit! It's called a flush cut saw because you can actually press the width of the blade flat against a surface and make cuts. I've used this to flush-cut wooden plugs that were used to cover screw holes in furniture. The time this saved VS cutting it close with another saw and carefully finishing it off with sandpaper is easily worth the price of this saw.

Some other things you should note:
- The dimensions listed on this page are wrong. The handle is about 1 1/8" wide x 6" long and the blade is about 1 1/2" x 5 1/2"
- This model is meant for smaller materials.

It seemed a little pricey to me at first, but it's totally worth it.
I misplaced it for a while and I ordered two more so I don't have
to be without one.

I use it for building high powered rockets. I cut mostly wood and
cardboard, but I've used it to cut fiberglass and various plastics.

The primary alternative in my mind is an X-Acto razor saw. There's
no comparison. The is *much* better.

I let me teenage son use the first one I bought to cut some carbon fiber board, and
it was returned "trashed" (teeth bent, messed up ... unusable to me)
So *maybe* it's not quite as durable as it might be, but * I * have used it and it's replacement
a lot (careful like you should treat any nice tool) and it's still plenty sharp.

Job Bob says "Check it out" :-)
