5.0 out of 5 stars Frankie Valli (vocals), Bob Gaudio (keyboards, vocals), Tommy DeVito (guitar, vocals), Nick Massi (bass, vocals), September 20, 2012
This review is from: 2nd Vault of Golden Hits (Vinyl)
The vocal group that became the Four Seasons went through many personnel changes and a couple of record labels before naming themselves after a New Jersey bowling alley. A failed 1961 single didn't do well, but when keyboardist/guitarist Bob Gaudio came up with a tune that he and producer Bob Crewe chose to call "Sherry," things really started happening. Lead singer Frankie Valli negotiated with Vee Jay Records to release this record. When it received airplay a deal with Vee jay was inked, making the boys this label's first white singing group.

"Sherry" went to #1 and so did follow-ups "Big Girls Don't Cry" and "Walk Like a Man." The Four Season phenomenon was in full swing. Until the Beatles hit big in Feb.'64, they were America's most successful pop/rock band. Royalty issues with Vee Jay resulted in the Seasons leaving in January of 1964 for Philips. Rights to all of their Vee Jay era recordings reverted to Frankie and the guys when their old label declared bankruptcy two years later.

Released in November of 1966, 2ND VAULT OF GOLDEN HITS (PHS 600-221 / PHM 200-221) contains mostly Vee Jay recordings. It's a rare case where a sequel "best of" LP exceeds the first volume (released late in '65) because the songs on it are OLDER and from a different company. (NOTE: Their 12/63 cover of Maurice Williams' "Stay" didn't chart while backed with "Peanuts," but did reach #16 two months later when the flip was "Goodnight My Love." The band was so popular back then, DJs often played both sides of singles, resulting in several 'B's making Billboard's Hot 100.

"Big Girls Don't Cry" may be the ultimate 4 Seasons record. "Connie-O' is a group harmony number with a haunting melody. The instrumental opening of "Working My Way Back To You" has a Motown feel. "I've Got You Under My Skin" is a pop masterpiece that combines quartet vocals with a hybrid rock/orchestral backing that equals the best Phil Spector 'Wall of Sound' records.

On a personal note, "Peanuts" and "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright" are my favorite 4 Seasons records. I have the mono "2nd Gold Vault" LP. It's great, for these sound just as they did so long ago over car and home AM table radios.

The second of the Philips Compilation LPs of The 4 Seasons hits (their earlier recordings from VeeJay and later Philips recordings) is another excellent example of their work. Goes great with the Gold Vault of Hits!

An excellent collection, and even better for simply replicating the original vinyl album by having just 12 tracks. Well done to whomever thought this up!

My friend loves the 4 Seasons and somehow in moving she lost her cd's of them. This is a great and affordable way to get a gift for someone who loves this group.

5.0 out of 5 stars The 4 Seasons' Vee-Jay Recordings!, February 14, 2013
This review is from: 2nd Vault of Golden Hits (Audio CD)
After a Lawsuit, filed by both Bob and Frankie against Vee-Jay and the recordings finally given to them in 1965,Philips,in a Reissue frenzy, issued 3 comps:"Looking Back","The 4 Seasons' Christmas Album",and this one, because of the group's busy schedule of recording of "Genuine Imitation Life Gazette",which was finally issued in 1969...all 3 featured Vee-Jay material, one the Xmas Lp,a complete Reissue of the 1962 Lp...This Lp was the last to hit #1 on the charts for the group, until 1974's "Who Loves You".
