This review is from: Vault Guide to Schmoozing (Paperback)
This book is okay. It seems to be trying to help people blur the line between their social and business contacts. This isn't a bad idea, but the book really doesn't have much content. It certainly has some ideas to help you get into the habit of talking to people you wouldn't ordinarily start conversations with. I wouldn't say any of the information is new, but it doesn't hurt to have a reminder.
I thought the book wasn't very well organized. There were just too many interuptions with side-bars, mini articles in chapters, interviews, silly Top 10 lists, etc. It was a distraction to the main text, and 99% didn't add useful content.
Several sections seem out of date. It gushes about the "novelty" of e-mail and that people didn't get much spam! Like another reviewer mentioned, it suggested taking up smoking with your boss. Seriously? Then the almost too hip tone of the book makes the out-moded sections more noticable.
This book seems focused on people trying to break into publishing, politics, and the entertainment industry. Many of their rules don't apply or are just silly for engineers, scientists, and related fields. I don't have any contacts who would be offended if I sent them my resume or asked if their company was hiring.
