This review is from: Vedanta and Christian Faith (The Basket of Tolerance Series) (Paperback)
I read this book when I was a 19-year-old college student, completely fed up with a Christianity that I thought had absolutely nothing to say to me. Through Bede Griffiths I learned that there is an intellectually complete mystical tradition within Christianity and that, far from being dead or unimportant, it remains vibrant.
Bede Griffiths was a Catholic Benedictine monk who lived in India for many years and had a lot of time to think about the ways in which Vedanta (an orthodox Hindu philosophy) and the teachings of the Christian (Catholic) church's more mystical early fathers intersect.
This book taught me that it wasn't necessary to quit Christianity in order to find a spiritual home where my own abstract, mystical beliefs could be acceptable. This book ultimately inspired me to convert to Catholicism.
It's a short book -- but profound. Be prepared to spend many hours reading a few sentences at a time and then thinking about them.
