5.0 out of 5 stars More of the good stuff, February 6, 2010
This review is from: Vedergallningen (Audio CD)
How could no one have reviewed this yet? Gotta be more Garmarna fans out there who should have picked up on this. If you like Garmarna this is another step in the right direction, Starting with Gamen (The Vulture) it is pure raw energy in a Norse rock way with vocals from a valkurie. Euchari reminds me of the Hildegard von Bingen CD they also have out (that one has more flow and is a total new direction for Garmarna). This song captures that spirit. Halling Jaron is slow and introspective. Vedergallningen (Vengeance)starts slowly and builds tension. Think of some great harm that has come to you and you are enacting your vengence. Nio Ar (Nine Years)is next and is also slow. The instruments they use evoke such emotions. This song has more of a violin feel rather than the raw drone of their upbeat fifts that I love so much. Sorgsen Ton (stomped bread) starts slow and gains momentum and has wonderful syncopation. Herr Holkin weaves an ancient tapestry beautifully using new needles of instrumentations. Their use of strings and drums weaved with the vocals creates a distant Teutonic deapth that some can understand. If you like Garmarna you understand. Black (Ink) dark, somber, and minimal. The title says it all. Polska crashes upon the scene like the sun coming out after a rain. Instrumental all the way and makes you want to dance in the ancient way. Brun (The Robber) starts grisly yet poignant and remains so until it fades seemingly into the cold distance.

Love this group. Have all their music. The CD by them that is different is the Hildegard von Bingen one mentioned earlier. Their musis is strong, fierce, beautiful, tragic and harkens to an earlier time with modern instruments. The vocals are pure and strong, the violin/fiddle work is wonderful. Drum/percussion solid. This is good stuff. Now, where did I leave my longship?
