Amazon.com Product Review

An after-market fence is a fantastic way to ratchet up the performance of a basic table saw, turning it into a precision tool. And this Vega system is easy to install and a pleasure to use, with a very agreeable price for passionate woodworkers and do-it-yourselfers.

The quality and capabilities of this "utility" model match those of the professional version that Vega’s better known for, and though the company markets it for saws that don’t get "extremely heavy use," it’s absolutely rugged enough for the exacting home woodworker. Hands down, the best feature about this first-class fence is the micro adjustment. We’ve all done it: tap, tap, tap on the fence, hoping for just the breadth of a hair’s change in position. Enjoy that? We don’t either. But this Vega has a threaded rod and thumb nut that moves the fence thousandths of an inch in either direction. A full rotation of the nut carries the fence 1/16th of an inch, and the cam locks the position securely.

Another feature we love is the fence bar itself: It’s high, wide and has a channel along its length, perfect for substantial sliding jigs, like, say, a miter spline jig. And while the finish on some of the other parts isn’t as refined as it could be, the fence bar is sweet. It’s made of aircraft quality aluminum alloy extrusions, lightweight for easy handling, but extremely rigid, and we like the way the black anodized finish cuts down on friction. The fence rides beautifully on the rails, and we found lockdown to be rock-solid.

Installation wasn’t nearly as complicated as we had anticipated, and it probably won’t take you more than 30 minutes even if you happen to have one of the saws that requires drilling a couple of holes. But if you’ve got a Delta Unisaw or contractor model, a Powermatic 66 or a 10-inch Craftsman, for example, you’ll be ready to roll without the extra drilling.

You could spend a whole lot more money than this on an after-market fence, but the results you’ll get from this Vega will rival any big-ticket fence’s performance, and you’ll depend on it for the ultimate accuracy and reliability. --Kris Jensen-Van Heste

Product Description

COMPARE PERFORMANCE PRICE WITH ANY FENCE!Being able to cut materials safely and precisely on your table saw is essential for fast and accurate Woodworking. Unless saw fences are well designed they make cutting a chore instead of pleasure, resulting in poor quality and inaccurate cuts. Most Saw Fence Systems... Do not lock parallel to saw blade Do not have accurate measuring scales Have Fence Bars that are too short Do not have adequate width ripping capacity Require frequent re-alignment Lack safety devices Are unable to be finely adjustedThe Vega Saw Fence Systems solve all of these problems (and more!) to assure Accurate and reliable cuts combined with smooth, precise motion. UTILITY MODEL 26 or 50 Designed for contractors saws, smaller cabinet saws, and 10" saws that don't receive extremely heavy use, the Utility Model Fence is simply a small version of the very successful Professional Model. With all the great features of the Pro Model (fast installation, super precision, micro adjustments and more), the Utility Fence will upgrade your saw to a very precise cutting machine at a very reasonable price. The Utility Model Vega Saw Fence System is available with 26' or 50' rip capacity to the right of the blade and 8' to the left. Vega Fence Model FAQ

5.0 out of 5 stars Vega Saw Fence System, November 30, 1999

This is the best fence I have ever used or seen. It's accuracy and ease of adjustment is unmatched. You can one hand adjust and set the lock. I have owned and used this system weekly for over two years, and never had to readjust the fence. Removal of the fence is also a one hand operation, just lift off and stow away.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important Table Saw Upgrade, January 6, 2001
By
"ilader" (Teaneck, NJ United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vega U26 Table Saw Fence System: 36-Inch Fence Bar, 26-Inch to Right (Tools & Home Improvement)
I upgraded an old Craftsman table saw fence with the bottom-of-the-line Vega aftermarket fence a few years ago. This old saw had the stock fence which clamped at both ends. It inevitably clamped a little off perpendicular each time, and no adjustment helped. The Vega fence required drilling a couple of holes, as the existing holes did not match. But accuracy was not crucial; it was easy to square up the fence after installation. The Vega fence does not require frequent readjustment. It is very easily removed for crosscutting. It holds position very well, and returns to the same place easily. The micro-advance feature is unnecessary, since the fence slides very easily, with little stiction. It has held up well under years of outdoors boatbuilding abuse, as well as in-shop furniture making, with frequent dragging of the saw over rough terrain (which usually necessitates a variety of table and blade readjustments). The bottom line: the Vega fence helped make a bad saw into a pretty good one (in combination with top-of-the-line blades, a rolling base, a sliding crosscut table and an alignment kit). If you want to keep an old saw, you should upgrade the fence, if only as a safety measure - I used to get kickbacks and stalls all the time, now I never do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Perfect!!, June 16, 2001

"turbosek" (Lynden, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vega U26 Table Saw Fence System: 36-Inch Fence Bar, 26-Inch to Right (Tools & Home Improvement)
All I can say about this fence is WOW! If you have an existing saw that you are thinking about replacing due to the terrible standard fence performance....DON'T. Save yourself $1000 and just buy this fence. I put it on 10 year old Craftsman contractor saw and now I cut "dead on" boards. The micro-adjust eliminates the annoying task of "bumping" the fence back and forth to get the measurement crosshair to the desired measurement. You simply move the fence to within about an inch of where you want it and lock down the smaller of the two handles. Then you spin a micro-adjust wheel to slowly move the fence to the exact measurement viewed through a clear window with crosshair...and lock down the larger handle. You are ready to go. The fence also stays exactly where you lock iot down, even with a tremendous amount of force pushed against it...very precise machining here. This fence is extremely simple to install and it was perfectly parallel to the blade/miter slot right out of the box. Get this fence and you will never regret it.

The only negative is that you cannot effectively use a featherboard clamped to the fence in the vertical position. Because the far end of the fence only glides on the back rail (it doesn't clamp) any upward force from a board being pushed through, and up against a featherboard, lifts the far end of the fence off the back rail. This is only a minor inconvenience if any at all.
