Editorial Reviews

“Complete with introductory comments about the scope of the work, a section on the nuances of product labeling, vegan alternatives, and glossary, this is an invaluable guide for vegans who are attempting to become veganissimo: vegan to the highest possible standard.”
Library Journal

“Since voting with our dollars is indeed the easiest way we can each directly impact suppliers, I see Veganissimo A to Z as a way to further arm each of us with the knowledge we need to live our lives in harmony with our ethical beliefs. And for the new vegan, or heck, even the not-yet-vegan who is well on their path and calls themselves an “animal lover,” this book could be a real eye-opener, and an accessible way to begin to eliminate cruelty from their lifestyle for good.”
Our Hen House

“Takes knowing what animal products are in your food, supplements, cosmetics and even electronics to a new, transparent level, helping you navigate confusing labels.”
―Delicious Living

“Those new to a plant-based diet (and the Vegan Police) will be pleased with Veganissimo A to Z, a new guidebook with more than 2,500 detailed descriptions of animal, mineral, chemical and plant-based ingredients, along with their uses and alternative names to help readers quickly identify whether or not the long, confusing words on food packages indicate “vegan" or not. Veganissimo, which means 'as vegan as possible,' also includes extensive references, the best of which is a guide to the various 'certification' logos that appear on products and packaging.”

“If you believe you are what you eat, this book can be a big help.”
The Providence Journal

“This book may leave you feeling uneasy, and even a little queasy, but on the brighter side, with this book in hand you’ll be better informed to shop smarter than ever.”

The idea behind this book is interesting, even to a dedicated meat eater. Essentially it helps decode many ingredients found in foodstuffs and household products to ascertain if they derive from animals. Sometimes the name is deliberately misleading or somewhat prone to cause confusion (if you are less confrontational).

Of course, there are degrees of veganism and it is down to each and every person just how "pure" they will hold their diet, similarly for those who are vegetarian. The book's publicity material says that it caters particularly for those who practice "veganissimo" - a relatively new word meaning one who is vegan to the highest possible standard, or as an adjective the most vegan. For this review no position is taken on veganism or similar diets.

The first 234 pages of the book list various ingredients from A to Z, before a series of product labelling decoding advice is given, enabling you to decipher some of the sometimes baffling squiggles that can appear on products. After that a series of various reference resources and further reading is given.

To be clear, this reviewer personally could not think of anything worse than having to decipher each and every product label due to a diet. Whether it is due to a personal choice, such as veganism, or due to a medical issue or allergy, yet there are many who have chosen this path or have no choice in the matter if they want to live. A book of this nature could make a difference. Even as a meat eater, for whom there is no real difference either way, this book was still a fascinating look. Written from a U.S. perspective, it is possible that its currency is less valid in some countries but nonetheless it is a great, comprehensive work that has the capacity to inform and educate.

If you want to be true to your vegan life style, this book is a must. It is packed with
all of your needs to avoid products that use animal products. There is no need to
test products on animals, or use any part of them in products. Being a vegan
for over 20 years, has helped my health in so many ways.

Avoid all products such as cleaners, make-up, gelatin capsules in vitamins,
and many others. There are many products out there, that have not been
tested on or use animal products, that work just fine.
Educate yourselves so that the animals and the earth
do not suffer any longer over MONEY!
