Editorial Reviews

Review

This work is a welcome addition to the field of labor relations and labor history... Highly recommended.

(Choice)

This book would appeal to anyone interested in the history of Las Vegas, labor relations, organized labor, or knowing more about the worker struggles that took place behind the neon lights.

(Amy Butler Monthly Labor Review)

My professor for my American Labor History course selected this book as a mandatory reading--go figure.

After starting to read it, I was surprised at how interesting it was and I can honestly say that I enjoyed this book. For those of you thinking I am trying to get extra credit--I already graduated last year. This book divulges into the start of life in "Vegas". Vegas has this image of being wild, fun, and rich, but behind it all is about the dirty and harsh realities of working-people life. Imagine "Showgirls" but, instead, it is about the cooks, valet boys, hotel maids, and a bit about the gangsters. All of whom are just trying to make life better.

I do not consider myself an exceptionally good reader, but I found this book to be simple to read. The words were not overpowering and, at times, I found myself imagining the scene in the book. I would recommend this book to others who are seeking to increase their knowledge about the history of work in America or are interested in topics like sociology.

Would I read this again? Yes, I would.
