4.0 out of 5 stars Another family saga -- with the Colemans?
I'll admit it -- I was suckered into getting VEGAS RICH because of the name Coleman. I thought to myself, "Is Fern Michaels creating an alternate history for the Coleman family, this time in Vegas?" I was half right -- there are Colemans involved, but not the ones I thought I would see from her TEXAS series. No, this deals with Sallie Coleman, Seth...

2.0 out of 5 stars Short choppy sentences and weak female characters
This is my first, and probably last, Fern Michaels book. The sentence structure made reading it frustrating at times. They are very short and choppy with little flow.
What really disappointed me was the weakness of the female characters. An attempt is made to make them seem like woman to admired and revered when, in fact, they are actually poor role models...

4.0 out of 5 stars Another family saga -- with the Colemans?, December 28, 1999
This review is from: Vegas Rich (Mass Market Paperback)
I'll admit it -- I was suckered into getting VEGAS RICH because of the name Coleman. I thought to myself, "Is Fern Michaels creating an alternate history for the Coleman family, this time in Vegas?" I was half right -- there are Colemans involved, but not the ones I thought I would see from her TEXAS series. No, this deals with Sallie Coleman, Seth Coleman's younger sister, and her quest to make something of herself, thanks to the kindness of one of her clients -- Sallie's a prostitute, you see, in the early 1920s in the small and dusty town of Las Vegas. It's an interesting premise and I'll give credit to Michaels for creating Sallie's story and where her life goes from there. Had I never read her TEXAS series, I might have been completely drawn in...but I'm not. Michaels starts to occasionally drop in "crossovers" with the Colemans of Texas, and it's there I have the problem. Suddenly, Agnes Ames (Billie Ames Coleman's mother), companion to the callous Seth Coleman, has a heart! Billie Coleman flies out to see Fanny Coleman (Sallie's daughter-in-law) frequently! Sallie helps out Coleman Enterprises with her money! These intersections with the TEXAS characters don't pan out in terms of complimenting the TEXAS novels in the continuity department -- and for me, that's a glaring error. Those problems aside, it's a fair first novel for Michaels in her new series. If you like family sagas and Fern Michaels, you'll be content.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great, Entertaining and Fast Read, October 29, 1998

I really enjoyed reading this first in the series of three family saga books. Fern Michaels does an excellent job of pulling you into the story. It's nearly impossible to put this book down...it is packed with new dilemmas, and you can't wait to see how they turn out. I just started the second in the series, and I know I will have to read all three so I know the lives of all of these characters will turn out OK. Finally, the writing style is very easy (but interesting) to read, so you move along quickly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Vegas Rich demands it be read in one sitting..., May 3, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Vegas Rich (Mass Market Paperback)
The story line in Vegas Rich not only compels one to read the book non-stop, but also leaves the reader anticipating the next novel in the saga.

I particularly enjoyed how Michael's weaves the diverse personalities, intricate character traits and various themes throughout several generations while maintaining a healthy balance and resistance between the "good" and "bad" characters. The tensions this creates propell one through the book, leaving no room for apathy or boredom. By the time the reader has finished the book, he/she feels like part of the family and hates to "leave".

Michael's on-going theme of "family helping family" is a welcome value statement offseting the commentary of greed and self-indulgence that her "bad" characters manifest.

I look forward to reading the next two books of this series.

2.0 out of 5 stars Short choppy sentences and weak female characters, July 9, 2011
This review is from: Vegas Rich (Mass Market Paperback)
This is my first, and probably last, Fern Michaels book. The sentence structure made reading it frustrating at times. They are very short and choppy with little flow.
What really disappointed me was the weakness of the female characters. An attempt is made to make them seem like woman to admired and revered when, in fact, they are actually poor role models.
Instances include two women both married to horrible men, one finally gets a divorce after threatening it for fourteen years and the other never does. In the latter part of the book, the female lead, Fanny, allows her ex-husband to come stay on her property to recover from an injury and emphatically states the he can only remain for 6 months and no ramps will be built for him because he won't be there long enough to justify the expense..then she build ramps and tells him he can stay as long as he needs, while allowing his drug addiction and continued verbal abuse of her to continue.
While there are a couple of decent men in the book, they are both treated no better than your average dog and given as much consideration. Both pine their lives away waiting for women who will never marry them and expect them to just be happy with the situation.
A very disappointing read.

5.0 out of 5 stars could NOT put this series books down!!!, July 1, 2010

This review is from: Vegas Rich (Paperback)
start in order with the texas series, and then follow with the Vegas series and the Ky. series.
I literally was staying up all night because these books made me feel like I actually knew the family..

I was fully engrossed in this series and loved every word.
I love to read and have read many authors, but Fern Michaels has a way to make you feel like you are right there with them.
I could picture every person in my mind.
if you want a good read this summer, I suggest buying the whole series at one time.....they have them boxed that way.
you will NOT be disappointed!!

4.0 out of 5 stars More fun than Oprah, September 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Vegas Rich (Mass Market Paperback)
After reading some of the heavy-duty-mind-expanding-womanly books a la Oprah, I needed some mental reading relief. My mother gave me this book and said, " Read something without thinking about it!" So I did and my mind was freed and I am now ready to start Vegas Heat! Map of the World will have to wait!

1.0 out of 5 stars Tacky and Garish, August 8, 2008
This review is from: Vegas Rich (Mass Market Paperback)
I recently finished Vegas Rich by Fern Michaels and I must say it was a painful process. A part of the book (when Fanny just got into town) mentions that the character could never live in a town that looked like what it was in broad daylight, cheap and tacky. I feel that way about these ignorant, unrealistic characters that Michaels chose to create. Yes the novel does leave food for thought, and the thought is, who would be stupid enough to keep taking the abuse the antagonists in this story keep dishing? You are supposed to respect and admire the heroines in the story. I kept finding myself let down by the pitiful reasons the self-righteous protagonists in Vegas Rich had for prolonging their suffering, not to mention causing the perpetual demise of the dynasty. Technically the book is poorly written, there are not enough transitions to really let a reader immerse themselves in the `world' the author is trying to create. Also, a lot is left out in terms of dialog, and by dialog, I mean who is saying what to whom. Makes for a confusing scene and really breaks the `fourth wall'. I wish I wasn't one to finish every book I picked up, but I am and this is my first review, so I don't want any Michaels fans to take this too seriously.
