3.0 out of 5 stars Mediocre Gardening Book
There's very little personal insight or wisdom here, but it's a semi-decent book that will teach you the basics of vegetable gardening within a very watered down and generic framework. If you really are a dummy, you might like that kind of thing, but there are much better choices available. I recommend The Vegetable Gardener's Bible instead for two reasons:...

Like the rest of the books in the Dummies series, this book takes a light-hearted approach to a heavy topic such as gardening. By focusing on vegetables the content remains helpful and informative. The book was divided into sensible sections--the basics, what to plant, how to plant, and so forth. I appreciated the instruction on gardening beginnings such as constructing a bean pole and what tools a novice needs. The last half of the book talks about specific vegetables, and has handy information on what grows best where. I believe this makes a good first-time gardener book or a companion to a book with more pictures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Any Gardener's Must-Have Book, April 5, 2000
By A Customer
I have other gardening books, but none of them are as easy-to-follow or as comprehensive as this one. The text is so much fun, it's easy to read cover-to-cover. Yet, if you need specific information on a certain type of vegetable or technique, the index is very easy to use. The appendix gives the dates and growing seasons for every major (or minor) city in the U.S., as well as additional resources and catalogs to consult. A wonderful resource for a novice or an experienced gardener.

This is a great book for any vegetable gardener. It is easy to follow and you don't have to read it from start to finish. It is laid out so you can go to the sections that interest you the most. I am a first year gardener, and I got many, many compliments on my first ever vegetable garden, thanks mostly to the help of this book. A must have!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for the beginning gardener, March 24, 2010

We're putting in our first vegetable garden and are absolutely clueless about the process. We have several gardening books that assume there's at least a basic understanding of the gardening principles. We needed a basic book and got it with the Dummies book. For right now, for this first garden, this is the book we're using.

This book was very informative from how to read the labels on seed packets to how to best harvest and store your mature veggies. I would recommend this book to anyone who has never tried growing their own vegetables before.

I bought this for my husband, who's just getting into vegetable gardening, and it's so helpful. The book tells how to prepare, plant, maintain and harvest all the vegetables we planted this year. Both of us are learning a lot, and we're now enjoying the fruits of our labor. It was the perfect gift for him; he tells others what a help it's been. And I'm learning a lot, too!

This is hands down the 'must have'book for new veggie gardeners. I have mine dog-eared and highlighted so much that I may need to get a new copy soon! I have been gardening for 3 years now and this is still my go to book. It has container options, herbs, odd veggies, you name it! I have purchased many books since this one and this is Still my favorite.

Retired and started my first garden this year. My mistakes are glaringly clear reading this book. It seems like every sentence, no matter how seeming inconsquential, is important. Well organized, good advice from soil preparation to harvest for most anything you'd ever want to grow.
