More About the Author

Teresa Bergen has a long history of writing stories and articles for periodicals large and small. Her earliest works featured dinosaurs, lizards and giant mutant tarantulas. Later she started writing about people, mostly those living on the fringes of society. Her work has been published in Exquisite Corpse, River City, South China Morning Post, and Ms. She has a BA in journalism from UC Santa Cruz and an MFA in fiction writing from Louisiana State University. In 2000, Louisiana granted Bergen an Individual Artist Fellowship. She currently lives in Portland, Oregon. In addition to writing fiction, she writes health and fitness articles and artist profiles for websites, and the occasional government fisheries manual.

The author presents frank food reviews of several dining establishments in various Asian countries. Being a vegetarian, I find it scary to order food in countries where I don't have a good command of the language and have trouble communicating the fact that I don't want to eat meat. This guide would encourage me. Plus, there's always the chance that a restaurant manager or owner will say there is no meat in a dish (even if there is) just to please the foreign visitor. This guide is helpful and shows off the author's wit. Plus, there are the nicely illustrated Bonus Animals which showcase the beautiful creatures in that part of the world.
