Gentlemen (and ladies), start your food pros!,
By Snowpea (Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Vegetarian Burgers (Paperback)
I borrowed this book from my local library and tried 3 recipes (rice and lentil; pumpkin seed and squash; mushroom). The patties all turned out delicious and had excellent texture -- and each kind had a different flavour. The author has obviously tried each recipe and tweaked them to perfection. It does take a little time to put a recipe together, and it's best if you own a food pro, but the recipes will yield 9-12 patties, enough for a few meals. If you are a vegetarian already, some of your usual leftovers can be used as well. Rounded out with greens and all the fixins, these patties make for lowfat, healthy and tasty meals.

Excellent vegetarian burgers and toppings,

I found this cookbook at the library while I was on the hunt for delicious vegetarian burger recipes and was thrilled to find it. It contains a variety of burger and toppings with flavor influences from all over the world. Even though the cookbook is very single minded in its focus on burgers the flavors are so diverse that there is quite a range to choose from. Each recipe has quite a few ingredients (10-15 ingredients on average) and does take some prep time. However, most of the steps, while a little time consuming, are still very easy and do not require any advanced cooking skills. The flavor that results is also well worth the effort. These burgers are certainly MUCH better than any frozen veggie burger I have ever tasted. My personal favorites have included the cashew burgers and triple mushroom burgers. When topped with homemade vegan cheese from the The Ultimate Uncheese Cookbook: Delicious Dairy-Free Cheeses and Classic "Uncheese" Dishes the mushroom burger made for an exceptionally delicious and decadent tasting burger. Each recipe does yield 12 burgers which in my opinion is a pretty big yield so since I live alone I often freeze half the batch to save for a later date. So far the burgers have frozen and defrosted very well when packed tightly.
Even though these recipes do require some prep time and a fair number of ingredients I highly recommend this book because of the excellent flavor that results. A perfect buy for any vegetarian who loves eating veggie burgers or any omnivore who wants to eat less meat while still enjoying burgers. Recommended!

Great Recipes - Good Ingredients - Better than Other Books,
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Vegetarian Burgers (Paperback)
I purchased several of these vegie burger books including this one and "meatless burgers"...this is my clear favorite to date for several reasons - first, the author includes a wider variety of grain, beans and other ingredients aside from soy. The author also uses fresh ingredients and very few processed seasonings or other "junk" in the recipes. It is simply beyond me why so many other authors take a nutritious food then add inferior ingredients to the recipe.
That having been said, the author does assume you are starting from whole beans, grains and other sources rather than grinding your own. I would love to have seen recipes included for self-grinding options since there are so many more options available than in whole form but, it is simple enough to experiment with the basic recipes to work out your very own. While "meatless burgers" was pretty good, if I were to purchase only one vegie burger book it would be this one - hands down. Much greater variety, quality ingredients.

Veggie Burgers,

While I am enjoying making the recipes from Mr. Kirchner's Vegetarian Burgers, I'm finding they require some ingredients I don't usually have in my cupboard, i.e., asafetida. My local Kroger supermarket didn't have it either. His instructions and measurements are accurate, detailed and the recipes come together well. The burgers have a multi-cultural, ethnic bend of flavors. Nothing boring with these vegetarian offerings. If you're looking for a starting cookbook for veggie burgers, I recommend Lukas Volger's Veggie Burgers Every Which Way. Mr. Kirchner's offering is a wonderful addition for the next step up in experience.
