5.0 out of 5 stars HOORAY!, April 18, 2002
This review is from: Vegetarian Comfort Food: Meals Like Mom Makes, Without the Meat (Paperback)
Finally, a book that makes some of my old favourites available to me again. I despaired for years of ever finding a good vegetarian substitute for German cabbage rolls, and here it is. The Penne Alla Vodka in this book is also to DIE for. Anyone who grew up in a carbohydrate-laden environment as a child is going to adore this book, full of noodles, potatoes, hearty soups, puddings, upside down cakes... this book is subtitled "meals like mom makes, without the meat". I'd agree, except I'm a better cook than mom ever was, and I'm not going to collapse from saturated fat ingestion from these wonderful recipes, either. Kudos to Jennifer Warren for this excellent volume. I look forward to future endeavours.

4.0 out of 5 stars Simple yet Delicious Recipes, October 2, 2004
By
This review is from: Vegetarian Comfort Food: Meals Like Mom Makes, Without the Meat (Paperback)
I bought this book a few weeks ago and have tried several recipes already, as most of them are rather simple to follow and they don't require a lot of fancy ingredients. I've just finished eating the French toast, which was DELICIOUS and prepared so quickly. I would also recommend the Colonel's Tofu--so Good! Even my veggie-suspicious cousin liked it. I definitely would endorse this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Thank goodness!, October 29, 2001

This certainly is a hearty book. Not only have I now added some DELICIOUS soups to my winter repertoire, but I feel like I've been cooking with a new friend. Warren's personal memories of each recipe and her down-home approach have made me feel truly welcomed into her culinary family. I never knew that I could learn to work quite easily with TVP, or to make a guilt-free vegan cake. I feel as if all my insecurities about vegetarian cooking have been addressed and solved by an intelligent and thorough author. Try this book--it's a feast!

5.0 out of 5 stars True comfort food!, March 3, 2006
This review is from: Vegetarian Comfort Food: Meals Like Mom Makes, Without the Meat (Paperback)
This book is truly spectacular. I have numerous vegetarian books on my shelves, but this is the only one I can honestly say is flawless. Every recipie in it comes out wonderfully. It's not the book for you if you're looking for a gourmet flair or fancy titles. If you're looking for a book of spectacular, tasty foods that remind you of home and fill you up using what you probably already have in your panty- this book is a gem. The colonel's tofu is my personal favorite- I make it weekly. I also love her peanut sauce (chinese take-out worthy!), asian sesame salad dressing (restaurant quality), spaghetti 'bolognese' (so quick and tasty!), and taco crumbles. Her 'not-refried beans' were such a hit with my friends that we now call them 'crack beans'- because they're just that addictive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diverse selection of unique and interesting recipes., January 21, 2002
This review is from: Vegetarian Comfort Food: Meals Like Mom Makes, Without the Meat (Paperback)
This book contains a diverse selection of recipes, many of which are unique and sound great. For example, in a section on "Breakfasts & Brunches" Warren has such recipes as Chocolate Chip and Banana Pancakes and Cinnamon Peanut Toast. Avocado-Tomato Melt is an interesting sounding recipe in the "Sandwiches" section while Curried Squash Soup is in the "Soups" section. Other examples of interesting sounding recipes include: Creamy Vegetable-Chickpea Salad ("Salads"), Maple Syrup Vinaigrette ("Dressings, Dips & Sauces"), Tomato-Cream Penne with Vodka ("Main Courses"), Two-Tone Oven Fries ("Vegetables"), Garlic Basil Bread ("Side Dishes") and Vegan Chocolate-Rum Cheesecake ("Desserts".)

Vegetarian Comfort Food is a recipe book for vegetarians, although vegans could easily modify most of the recipes to suit their diets. In fact, Warren offers a short section on "Substitutions - Notes for Vegans."

If you've become bored with your vegetarian/vegan recipes or simply want to try some unique recipes I recommend that you pick up a copy of Vegetarian Comfort Food.-Reviewed by N. Glenn Perrett
