The Vegetarian Slow Cooker,
By
This review is from: The Vegetarian Slow Cooker: Over 200 Delicious Recipes (Paperback)
The Vegetarian Slow Cooker is a must have for people who are looking to reduce their meat consumption and still have quick and easy to prepare meals. As a busy mom, I really rely on my slow cooker and this cookbook helped me introduce vegetarian meals to my family and still be in and out of the kitchen quickly.
The Vegetarian Slow Cooker contains over 200 vegetarian recipes that can be made in your slow cooker. The cookbook is broken down into 11 chapters. There is an introduction chapter that discusses why the author chose to write a vegetarian slow cooker cookbook. The cookbook contains a very informative section on how to use your slow cooker and includes information on time management, slow cooker basics, understanding your slow cooker and food safety. The recipe chapters are broken down into Bread and Breakfast, Starters and Snacks, Soups, Fondues and Savories, Mostly Veggies, Pastas and Grains; Beans, Lentils, Tempeh, and Tofu; Sides, and Desserts. Each recipe is featured on one page and there are many gorgeous colorful photographs throughout the cookbook. The recipes include the recipe title, a brief description of the recipe, a detailed ingredients list that indicates both US and metric measurements, and step by step instructions. There are tips on each page that discuss the type of slow cooker, helpful information on the ingredients and possible substitutions. The recipes are very easy to follow and the instructions are well written. There are recipes that use a variety of different sized slow cookers ranging from small (1 1/2 quart) to large (5 quart). Not all recipes can be made in all sized slow cookers. However, there are several recipes that can easily be halved to make smaller sizes. Some recipes require the use of a slow cooker stoneware, souffle dishes, food processor, etc. Recipes are notated for exactly what equipment and supplies are required. Since the cookbook is vegetarian, the recipes contain no meat. Many do contain dairy products like ricotta cheese, milk and half and half. There are also several with eggs. When it's possible to use non dairy substitutions, the recipe is notated as Vegan Friendly. There's a great variety of recipes included that will please both adults and children. Gourmet recipes like Mixed Vegetable Coconut Curry will tempt your appetite while Lentil Sloppy Joes will satisfy even the pickiest child. I cannot wait to try the Creamy Italian Fondue!

Beautiful pictures, Many Vegan Friendly Recipes,

I purchased The Vegetarian Slow Cooker recipe book and I am more than pleased with it. The pictures are absolutely gorgeous and also give you an idea of what the recipe should look like as finished product. Many recipes (probably more than half) are vegan friendly. Some do contain dairy and eggs. But, as an aspiring vegan, I found that this cookbook was worth the purchase price. Even most of the recipes that contain dairy and eggs can be substituted out with vegan alternatives. Recipes run the gamut from breakfast, main meals, and desserts. A must have for vegetarians and anyone with a slow cooker!!

Definitely Delicious and Easy to make,

This is definitely a vegan friendly cook book, and I believe every option could be made vegan, with some substitutions. What I found most satisfing was that this was a vegetarian cookbook that was down to earth, unlike many of the cookbooks I have bought in the last ten years and not used - I found several recpies to make right away. They were simple to follow, didn't take a long time and did not require me to be able to perform any advanced cooking maneuvers. I highly recommend this cookbook for any vegetarian looking to make "normal" dishes that non-veggies won't balk at.

I am a huge fan of Judith Finlayson and own every single one of her cookbooks. She is one of the most brilliant recipe creators out there, and any time I've tried something from one of her books, it's never failed.
My daughter has become a vegetarian and not being an expert on that type of diet, I was uncertain what to make. And, I wasn't sure if the rest of the family would like the same foods. Well, The Vegetarian Slow Cooker put all my doubts to rest. It has over 100 brand new recipes that appeal to my entire family, it works for me as a busy mom as I just have to pop in a few ingredients in the morning and come home to a delicious and nutritious meal. My slow cooker has become a staple in my everyday routine and I can't imagine not being able to depend on it and Judith's terrific recipes. I highly recommend this book!

I recently became a vegetarian, and this cookbook has been a lifesaver for me! I am the only vegetarian in the family, so this cookbook makes it easy for me to prepare something hearty & healthy that will last a few days for me, while i cook more traditional meals for the rest of the family. I absolutely LOVE it.

Vegetables and slow cookers - the best combination!,
This review is from: The Vegetarian Slow Cooker: Over 200 Delicious Recipes (Paperback)
So many people these days are reducing their meat consumption and are turning to a diet rich in vegetables and fruit. Judith Finlayson, cookbook author extra-ordinnaire, proves that vegetables are both nutritious and delicious and has come up with a huge variety of incredible recipes for my favorite kitchen appliance, the slow cooker. The Vegetarian Slow Cooker has over 200 new recipes that will appeal to anyone looking to eat better without having to spend the entire day slaving over a hot oven.
The book includes a chapter of tips on how to get the best use out of your slow cooker. It contains chapters including: Bread and Breakfast, Starters and Snacks, Soups, Fondues and Savories, Mostly Veggies, Pasta and Grains, and Desserts. The recipes are simple to understand and incredibly easy to follow. The best part of the book is that the author includes tips for each recipe, as well as telling you which recipes can be halved and tips for cooking ahead of time. The book also tells you how many servings a recipe yields and which recipes can be halved, very helpful if you're cooking for only one or two people. This would be a terrific gift for any vegetarian lover, anyone who loves slow cooking, or even anyone who is looking to eat healthier.

everything is yummy,

This is one of my favorite cook books. Everything I make turns out great. My family eats it and they are true carnivors. They don't like the flexitarian idea as a general rule, but they haven't complained about my use of this book yet.

This book is the best. I don't come from a very healthy family; we ate more fast food and television dinners as a child than I can even fathom, looking back. This book *literally* taught me how to feed myself in college. The recipes are delicious, though sometimes rather similar. And there aren't any wacky curveball ingredients. I have been able to find every ingredient for every recipe I've tried, and I live in a rural part of the midwest. A lot of the recipes can be mostly made beforehand and refrigerated, and then just assembled the next day. This is the perfect book for beginner cooks who like flavorful and healthy dishes, but don't have a lot of time to prepare them.

Fantastic resource for vegetarian recipes,

I love this cookbook - the recipes are delicious and easy to follow. I refer often to the chili recipes and I've made the savoury cheddar soup recipe several times in the past week - it is the best homemade soup I've ever made or tasted!

I have a nice medium sized slow cooker (4 quart) that has sat inactive on my counter all summer. I have only a few recipes that I have always cooked in it, limited because I'm a vegetarian and so many slow cooker books are based on meat dishes. With the cooler months coming, I decided to buy a vegetarian book to expand my recipe collection, and use my cooker on days when I work so that my family and I can have a hot dinner like on the days when I'm home. I was really looking forward to receiving this book. I chose this one based on some of the sample dishes listed in the description. But to my disappointment, most of them, the entire section of quiches, cheesecakes and lasagnas (which look delicious), call for an oval 5 quart slow cooker! Those were the only recipes that appealed to me, because the stews and soups contain a trend of the same ingredients throughout the book-spicy peppers, peppercorns, kale, celery root, that keep popping up in many of the recipes. Also, some recipes you have to stir or add things to during the cooking, which is not possible if you're out working. I don't want to buy a larger slow cooker. Which means I can't make at least a third of the recipes in this book. If you have a large oval slow cooker and enjoy exotic flavors, you will probably find the book useful. But for me, this book is pretty useless. |
