Book Description

July 2001
New from bestselling authors Imar Hutchins and Dawn Marie Daniels comes The Vegetarian Soul Food Cookbook: A Wonderful Medley of Vegetarian, Vegan & Raw Recipes Inspired by the Southern Tradition. Written not only for Vegetarians but really for anyone that is interested in making classic American Soul Food without losing the flavor of your grandmother’s Sunday dinner, but with a new and healthier spin. No more missing out on good hearty Southern foods because everything is cooked with meat, in meat or is meat! Here’s a way to introduce your family and friends to vegetarian twists on their favorite dishes.

Hutchins and Daniels break new ground with vegan versions of many soul food standards including Barbecue Ribs, Cheesy Grits, Macaroni & “Cheese” and Banana pudding. They also push the envelope with raw versions of everything from lasagna to sweet potato pie, and peach cobbler.

The Vegetarian Soul Food Cookbook was designed with the novice cook in my mind with easy to follow recipes that are divided by course and by both raw and cooked variations.

In addition to over 150 never before published vegetarian, vegan and raw recipes, The Vegetarian Soul Food Cookbook also includes:

* Meal planners for those hard to create holiday menus
* Guides for converting your favorite recipes to meatless alternatives
* Unique new raw food recipes for everything from “fried” green tomatoes to gingerbread.
* Instructional diagrams for making raw pie crust
* A food product index for finding the many ingredients mentioned as easy as 1-2-3!
* and much, much, more!

Hutchins and Daniels wrote The Vegetarian Soul Food Cookbook as a result of their own frustration with so-called “vegetarian” cookbooks that contained recipes that were fish-based or contained dairy and animal products that were not consistent with a plant based diet. They hope to acquaint you with the health benefits, history and flavor of this delicious cuisine. With recipes for everything from entrees and side dishes to breads and desserts, you will see the versatility of vegetarian soul food. Vegetarian cuisine isn’t just for vegetarians any more!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bet you can't eat just one..., October 5, 2001
This review is from: The Vegetarian Soul Food Cookbook : A Wonderful Medley of Vegetarian, Vegan and Raw Recipes Inspired by the Southern Tradition (Paperback)
The recipes in this book are easy to read and follow and taste great, particularly the biscuits! Many very traditional southern style ideas here! A fair representation in all areas, soups, deserts, side dishes, etc. Ingredient lists are simple. Most you probably have on hand and other items can be easily purchased at grocery or local health food stores. My only complaint is the lack of photos to accompany each recipe. Many recipes are in both vegan and raw food versions. I think that this will be a great way to introduce raw foods in my home!

2.0 out of 5 stars How in the world is this book worth nearly $300.00 ??!!?, October 12, 2011
This review is from: The Vegetarian Soul Food Cookbook : A Wonderful Medley of Vegetarian, Vegan and Raw Recipes Inspired by the Southern Tradition (Paperback)
I've been a vegetarian for over 40 yrs.- since back in the day when there were no pre-packaged vegetarian frozen dinners/ meals/ products of any kind- no sauces, vegan mac and cheese or anything at all but raw materials. If we wanted tacos we made our own wheat gluten and ground it up and seasoned it w. spices from Safeway and hoped it was semi-edible!!
I earned my living for several years as a vegetarian and vegan cook for regular people and some celebreties and didn't spend $300. at the GROCERY STORE !!!
And I grew up in the south and still make my great-great grandmothers biscuits and pies to swooning reviews-- and make a damn good vegan Gumbo to boot!
Just explain to me in simple English what makes this (or ANY cookbook) worth (or cost) this much. Deborah Madisons' books are among the best there is and price out at around $30. What gives? And why on earth would anyone in their right mind pay $300. for a book that isn't an out of print, rare, autographed, first edition by a prize-winning or renowned master of literature??

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Love this Book!, April 30, 2008

This review is from: The Vegetarian Soul Food Cookbook : A Wonderful Medley of Vegetarian, Vegan and Raw Recipes Inspired by the Southern Tradition (Paperback)
This was one of the first cookbooks I got when I went vegetarian almost 7 years ago. It is such a well-written and innovative book. You get recipes for authentic "soul-food" dishes without compromising your ethics. There are also lots of recipes for raw foods. I have tried many of the recipes (not all yet) and they always turn out fabulously. The cornbread recipe is a staple in my house as is the granola recipe and the carrot cake recipe. You will not be disappointed by this book. I hope to one day get out to Washington, DC to visit the restaurant owned by the writers. This book is highly, highly recommended.
