Editorial Reviews

Review

"A one-woman masterpiece celebrating vegetarianism, it's an offbeat, lighthearted look at the lore of vegetarian foods, as well as a compilation of good, appetizing recipes."  —Detroit News

"A treasure–Atlas's historical journeys are whimsical and memorable. Good, simple recipes, enough to form an entire repertoire of healthy, ethnic cuisine."  —Vegetarian Times

From the Publisher

More than 230 easty, tasty recipes using readily available ingredients are at the heart of these pages, but Vegetariana is more than a cookbook. It's a sampler of wit, folk wisdom, verse, botanical lore, literary anecdotes, and aphrodisia, all pertaining to the delights of delicious food and wholesome meals. In all, it's a lighthearted celebration of the vegetarian way of life.

More About the Author

Nava Atlas is the author and illustrator of many vegetarian and vegan cookbooks, most recently Wild About Greens, Vegan Holiday Kitchen, Vegan Express, and Vegan Soups and Hearty Stews for All Seasons. Her earlier books include Vegetarian Family Cookbook and The Vegetarian 5-Ingredient Gourmet.

In addition to cookbooks, Nava also produces visual nonfiction books including The Literary Ladies' Guide to the Writing Life (2011; http://www.literaryladiesguide.com), exploring first-person narratives on the writing lives of twelve classic women authors, and commenting on the universal relevance of their experiences to all women who love to write. Secret Recipes for the Modern Wife (2009) is a satiric look at contemporary marriage and motherhood through the lens of a faux 1950s cookbook.

I have the original, published in 1984, and not only is it a fabulous cookbook - it also makes for interesting reading. The illustrations are wonderfully witty. Nava Atlas is simply the best. If you love to cook and enjoy reading cookbooks you won't find a better one that this.

This was my first vegetarian cookbook, and it was a great introduction to this style of cooking. Nava Atlas is a funny, talented writer and the recipes work. Not too complicated, but not bare bones either, I will always have a copy of this book around.

I grew up with my mom cooking quite a few recipes from this book- the pictures especially bring back vivid memories as I cook from it. There are many recipes she never made that I am discovering now. The recipes are hearty & challenge the idea of vegetarian "rabbit food." I think it is especially relevant these days, because of these reasons:
Health, economy & enviroment all benefit from reducing the ever present meat in the American diet.
Simplicity & room for invention, because so many of the women of my generation seem intimidated by cooking.
Contemplation of ones food- in eating & cooking- are encouraged by the pictures and philisophical musings in this book.
Highly reccomended.
