simple pleasures,

I purchased this book because of its simplicity. You do not have to stock up on expensive hard-to-find ingredients to make the recipes. The food for the most part is not 'gourmet' but it is tasty and heart-warming. The design of the book itself is nice. The fonts are of a decent size- quite readable without the stupid pretentious cutesy style that many vegetarian cookbooks use. There is a nutrition breakdown for each recipe giving calories, protein, carbs, fat, sodium and fiber. In addition the book is bound so that you can lay it open and it stays flat. Very nice. I would give this book 5 stars, except that it does call for name brand items here & there. It's no big deal, I can simply substitute a different soy cheese, or use my own spice mixture, but it's annoying in its own little way. Over all, I'd have to say that I am impressed with this cookbook for the way it makes eating vegan accessible to people who are concerned about their nutritional intakes and want to be certain they're getting plenty of protein & not too much salt, etc.

Not a beautiful book, and not a low-fat book. This book does not include any animal products, but most recipes are very high in fat. The recipes I tried are not the most visually appealing, but many have tasted great. Miso Macaroni is a regular around here now, and the Apple Loaf Cake so sooo yummy. Rice Casserole was good but NOT very pretty. I am glad I wasn't having guests over to impress. I ended up breaking it apart, putting it in whole what tortillas with salsa, and it was a HIT! For the low price I paid for the book, I would say it was worth it for the few recipes that we now use regularly, and who knows, i am sure I will discover another gem from this book eventually.

The reviewer who said that this book was high fat was right. The book is more than worth it's price for the Miso Macaroni recipe. It is wonderful. I like that everything needed is easy to find.
