5.0 out of 5 stars You Simply Must Own This Book! Adorable!, November 17, 2006
This review is from: VeggieTales Bible Storybook: With Scripture from the NIrV (Big Idea Books) (Hardcover)
The moment I saw this book I knew I was going to love it. The cover immediately drew my attention as the adorable Veggie characters smiled at me; but that was only the beginning of this delightful work. Inside the pages of this book I was in for a real reading treat.
Reading the work, we find children's old Veggie Tale friends as they take them on a journey through some favorite Bible stories of Old and New Testament, bringing them to life as only Veggie Tales can do. We have the story of Esther, Daniel and the Lions' Den, David and Goliath; to name just a few. Each told with Veggie Tale characters illustrated in fun, colorful, creative pictures that will capture any child's attention and bring them right into the action of the story they are reading. Excellent!
I highly recommend this book. It will help to bring the Word of God alive to your child;this is simply a must have. Exceptional!

4.0 out of 5 stars Not a Bible, but a VERY good book!, September 22, 2007
This review is from: VeggieTales Bible Storybook: With Scripture from the NIrV (Big Idea Books) (Hardcover)
Creative and fun characters fill the pages of this book with vivid colors. This book combines 21 Veggie stories we know from their videos and books with the Bible stories that inspired them. It is organized in the similar order as one would find them in Scripture. The table of contents even divides them into the Old and New Testaments.

Each chapter begins with a "countertop" introduction. Bob and Larry describe a current problem then lead into the Veggie story. Now we know Goliath was not really a giant pickle, so immediately after the story, the book presents the real Bible story with selections taken directly from New International Reader's Version of Scripture. Bob and Larry return "countertop" to wrap up the application with a memory verse.

Here is a list of the chapter stories and their correlated Bible stories.

The Ballad of Little Joe --- Joseph, Genesis 37-45
Babysitter in DeNile --- Miriam (saving baby Moses), Exodus 1-2
Frog Wars --- Moses (and the Exodus), Exodus 3-14
Josh and the Big Wall --- Battle of Jericho, Joshua 5-6
Gideon Tuba Warrior --- Gideon, Judges 6-7
Dave and the Giant Pickle --- David and Goliath, 1 Samuel 17
King George and the Ducky --- David's Selfish Sin (with Bathsheba), 2 Samuel 12
Esther, the Girl who Became Queen --- Esther, Esther 2-8
Madame Blueberry --- David's Heart (of thankfulness), Psalm 34
Rack, Shack & Benny --- Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, Daniel 3
Daniel and the Lions' Den --- Daniel, Daniel 6-2
Jonah --- Jonah Runs Away, Jonah 1-4
The Stable that Bob Built --- Jesus is Born, Luke 2
Where's God When I'm Scared --- Jesus Walks on Water, Matthew 14
The Story of Fibber-o-loo --- The Good Samaritan, Luke 10
Larry's Lagoon --- The Prodigal Son, Luke 15
An Easter Carol --- Jesus is Risen, Luke 24
Minnesota Cuke --- Wise Advice, Romans 12
Lyle the Kindly Viking --- A Cheerful Giver, 2 Corinthians 9-15
The Gourds Must Be Crazy --- The Conversion of Paul, Acts 9
LarryBoy and the Rumor Weed --- New Life ... New Ways, Colossians 3

What I Like: The Scriptural parallels. It's great to be able to point back to the actual passages in the Bible. The memory verses are great! My kids love VeggieTales, so this book was an instant favorite in our house. The authors find very creative ways to relay lessons in ways kids can easily understand. Also, collecting all the videos can be quite expensive. This is a great way to get a lot of the stories for one low price.

What I Dislike: Initially, I was disappointed with some of the stories -- outer space, super heroes and Gilligan's Island don't belong in a Bible -- but the more I read it, the more I liked the book! The problem was my expectations. Please note this is not a Bible, but a Bible storybook. My only complaint now is with the "Frog Wars" chapter. VeggieTales did a much better job telling the story of Moses in "Moe and the Big Exit." Unfortunately, that video was released after the publication of this book.

Overall Rating: Very Good.

Love this! This is super cute and a great way to begin teaching bible stories to little ones. Baby likes the illustrations because of the big eyes and they teach a great message. I also like how they take it a little deeper at the end of each story which will be helpful as my child ages. Its sort of set up like mini bible studies for children in that way, which is nice.

I love this bible storybook and so does my little one. It is similar to the fun stories on dvd but at the end of each story, it provides the verses and the bible story that coincides with the Veggietales version.

My daughter is not quite 4 and has recently begun enjoying the Veggie Tales genre. We both just adore this book and she asks for it every night. She has some of the DVDs and recognizes the characters. Brilliant stories and beautifully illustrated. A firm favorite with us. Love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great introductions to bible stories, April 23, 2010

We are non-religious people, but I have a strong belief that most bible stories are still great moral stories and all people should be familiar with them. Veggie Tales introduce the bible in such a non-threatening way (I say that in jest since I am non-religious).
The stories are written so easy for even my 2nd grader to read them, They have the Veggie Tales version and then it is followed with the story from the bible. A great introduction to Bible Stories for anyone

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Storybook, keeps my 2-year-old's attention!!!, April 7, 2009

We bought this book for our son last year, before he turned two, and it has been a staple on his bookshelf ever since. He loves the pictures and the fact that he can recognize the characters from his favorite VeggieTales movies. Having the Veggie version of the story next to the actual Biblical version is great, since things can sometimes get lost in translation. The stories are concise and easy to read, the pictures entertaining. And there are quite a few stories there, each with a lesson and a verse from Quirdy (sp?) the computer, just like the movies. We love this book and are looking forward to reading it to our second son - when he's old enough to know not to chew on the pages, anyway!

4.0 out of 5 stars Veggie tales are fun!, February 23, 2009
This review is from: VeggieTales Bible Storybook: With Scripture from the NIrV (Big Idea Books) (Hardcover)
Really cute book. I like the fact that after the goofy and silly version of the bible story, they actually do tell the kids where to find the real story and give a brief summary of the TRUE Bible story. (Otherwise I might wonder if they would really pick up that it was a story from the Bible at all!) My kids enjoy it. The kids really like the Veggie Tales, so it was worth it.
