A great conversation-starter to watch with the kids,
By A Customer
This review is from: VeggieTales - God Wants Me to Forgive Them? [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I bought this video today for our 3- and 1-year old kids, who love the other "Veggie Tales" they've seen. But I also bought it for myself, thinking the "Gilligan's Island" spoof would be funny, and it truly was. Larry and Bob as "The Skipper" and his little buddy were right on target - it made me embarrased to see how much I remembered about that show! The story of Junior Asparagus getting his feelings hurt by the Grapes of Wrath initiated a discussion not only about forgiveness, but also about intentional cruelty. These tapes are wonderful for starting conversations with your children concerning morals, behavior and Bible teachings. Preschoolers just beginning to understand about making a mistake or causing pain will enjoy and benefit from this video. The music, as always, is a gas.

Sorry to hear the previous buyer got a damaged copy. They should return it instead of giving the movie a bad review. This was a wonderful illustration on forgiveness. It shows how kindness and forgiveness can change the hearts of others and how good it feels to forgive, even when we are hurt. It is just another fabulous Veggie movie!

Important topic, but not the best Veggie Tale,
By A Customer
This review is from: VeggieTales - God Wants Me to Forgive Them? [VHS] (VHS Tape)
My two children love Veggie Tales, and my son even knows all of the words to the theme song. I very much appreciate this series as a tool for teaching Christian values in a fun and clever way that is given on a level that kids can understand. That said I do have some comments about this video in particular. The Gilligan's Island segment is far better than the Grapes of Wrath segment. It has a GREAT song about forgiveness, and the message is very clear! The Forgive-O-Matic segment made me uncomfortable; even though I am not Catholic, it did seem a bit pointed. The Grapes of Wrath segment I felt fell short. The mean-spirited grapes were repeatedly intentionally mean, and that was used as a vehicle to explain the necessity of repeated forgiveness. The problem is that I've seen people use this type of argument in abusive relationships. Repeated forgiveness is necessary, for both the offender and offended, but the situation where the offender was not truly repentant was not dealt with. Perhaps this is too complicated for young children, but forgiving someone doesn't mean that you have to leave yourself open to abuse. Finally, I would have liked to see the concept of forgiving yourself included as part of repentance and accepting of salvation, as sometimes that can be the most difficult part if you are sincere.

Great movie,

This is a movie for everyone, no matter how old you are. I know people, ranging from 8 months, to 19 years that absolutly love Veggie Tales. This particular video is about forgiveness. First Jr. Asparagus must learn to forgive "The Grapes of Wrath" for making fun of him, and laughing at him. Jr's father teaches him (andone watching), that god wants us to forgive everyone. Then thereis Bob & Larry, telling the story about when Larry crashes their boat on an uncharted island(Larry has big dreams) and how everyone has to forgive him. This is definately a must see movie!

The VeggieTales tapes are great! This particuar tape is fun, but it isn't the best of the series. It has a very good message and is an easy way to begin instilling the Christian values that have been missing in entertainment.

A weaker entry in the series,
By A Customer
This review is from: VeggieTales - God Wants Me to Forgive Them? [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I love this series, but this is one of the weaker videos. Instead of having a story based on the Bible, the second tale is based on Gilligan's Island! Also, it's not as funny or imaginitive, and the songs aren't as good. My favorite is still "Where's God When I'm Scared."

very good, one little critique,

This is a very good early VeggieTales. They didn't quite hit their peak yet with this one. They do 2 segments instead of one larger segment. In between there is no song, but the Forgive-o-matic section is still good. It's just no Silly Song. This is a very good lesson for kids. When someone asks for forgiveness, give it to them. I would note only one thing. A person who is truly sorry will do more than say he or she is sorry. That isn't mentioned in the video, but I also think it is an oversight. However, I have to keep in mind that it is geared towards kids. Big Idea is trying to get the general message across, which they do very well. The parents need to be around to make sure the message in their head doesn't become one of cheap grace. We don't want our kids coming up to us asking forgiveness when all they really want is to get out of trouble and they genuinely aren't sorry. But, as I said, this is more of a note than a critique. I highly recommend the video.

Come on... you know you'll laugh. This is far more than a parody of Gilligan's Island, but a tool to teach your children about forgiveness. Some messages need reinforcement more than others, and forgiveness is one of them. Better than any sugar-coated message, "VeggieTales - God Wants Me to Forgive Them?" is excellent for parents and babysitters alike. CCD and Sunday School teachers also will find this useful for getting an age-old lesson across. I fully recommend this video. Anthony Trendl

Clever video stories with meaningful lessons,

This Veggie Tale video tells the story of the Grapes of Wrath - a bothersome grape family that insults Jr. Asparagus. Jr. learns that he has to forgive even those who hurt him.The second story is a clever takeoff of Gilligan's Island. Gilligan's Island fans will especially enjoy it. It features a great Jamaican-style song that you'll be singing long after the video is done.

VT tries again, but isn't perfect yet,
By Joyce (Sunnyvale, CA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: VeggieTales - God Wants Me to Forgive Them? [VHS] (VHS Tape)
The second video in the series, this VT ep didn't quite reach the quality that later videos would reach. I imagine this is because the authors were still new at making movies. The first half of the video, about the grapes of wrath, has no plot whatsoever and is merely a lesson. It is not presented in a very interesting way. The second half, the gilligan's island parody, was much more amusing and presented better music and a great message in a fun way. It still wasn't as good as the others, but it was decent. The Forgive-o-matic sequence really made me happy. I loved that part a lot. A good movie, but if you're looking to buy the best in the series, this isn't it.
