3.0 out of 5 stars Lyle the Kindly Viking Review by Nicky
This is the first Veggie Tales video since 1995 (Are you My Neighbor?) which has had two episodes. Both teach about Sharing.

The first episode, "Omelet", (Hamlet originally) is about a prince who has an omelet, made with the last eggs of the town. But then realizes by the help of others to share it. So he shares his eggs with the people.

Our family just watched this video and it was one of the best, I think! Esther was good, but I missed the Silly Song, and the wonderful humor that has become so characteristic of Veggie Tales.

Remember when Jimmy and Jerry Gourd decided to take over the show? Well, in this episode Archibald Asparagus tries to put some class into the story - the story is "Omelet" bearing strong resemblance to "Hamlet". Adults, listen carefully - there are MANY hilarious allusions to Shakespeare in this segment!

The "Silly Song with Larry" was "Classic Song with Larry" - just as hilarious, though!

The theme of the whole video is sharing and the main story, about Lyle, a Viking who does not enjoy the pillaging and plundering that seems to be part of being a Viking. Instead, Lyle (played by Junior Asparagus) goes out and gives the small bag of loot that the others give him back to the people, along with his handmade potholders! It is very touching and very funny at the same time.

The music for this most recent Veggie video was OUTSTANDING! Songs that will definitely stick in your head. Extremely creative, very well-produced, and lots of fun. Not to mention having the lesson of the importance of sharing.

Please do not think that these Veggie Tales videos are just for kids! Indeed, children would not pick up on a lot of the humor -Big Idea has really found something that appeals to children and adults alike. The group that watched the video tonight consisted of 2 40-somethings, 2 21-year-olds, and an 18 year old. I'm eager to have some little kids over so I can watch it with them!

Please check out my other reviews of Christian books, music, and videos! King George and the Ducky was excellent as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare, Gilbert & Sullivan, and a high silk hat, April 13, 2001
By

(REAL NAME)
When Archibald Asparagus takes the lead in the new VeggieTales production (focused on sharing), it is with the aim of making the show more serious and high minded. Fortunuately for us, the viewers, it makes it sillier than ever. Hoorah!

We start with a rendition of Shakespeare's not-so-famous play, "Omelet." We enjoy some amusing variations on well known lines, including "2B?" "Not 2B"--in the context of Battleship. The french peas are particularly endearing.

The standard Silly Song With Larry has been replaced by a Classy Song With Larry at Archibald's request, having a couple strong resemblances to Forrest Gump.

The title story, "Lyle the Kindly Viking", features an adorable Junior Asparagus as Lyle, the potholder-making, warbley-singing little viking boy. Larry the Cucumber is also amusing as Sven, who has a difficult time grasping the fact that, though this is a musical (this is where Gilbert & Sullivan come in), he doesn't have to sing EVERYTHING.

Everything about this VeggieTales is charming, hilarious, and filled with the kind of values that make the series so popular. The DVD is even better than the VHS, because in addition to the improved video and sound quality, we also get an interview with the creators, a wide screen version of Larry's song, and a storyboard comparison. Either way you go, the animation is high quality, the songs are catchy, and it's loads of fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lyle Brings Veggies Back From The Brink, March 27, 2001
By A Customer
Okay, I have to admit that when I watched Esther and only laughed like 3 times I was sacred that Big Idea had lost the big idea. But not so. LYLE THE KINDLY VIKING takes us back to the good old veggie days. THe songs are silly, the jokes are funny and the plot hillarious. AS Archibald takes over to add a highbrow attitude to the show we find the play Omlet featuring my favorites: THE GOURDS! It is way funny! Then the lost Goilbert and Sullivan operetta LYLE THE KINDLY VIKING is discovered. Another halarious romp. This is the first Veggie DVD and it is a nice attempt. I am sure there will be more special features to come. The storyboard speecial feature was a little lame but the interviews are nice. THe widescreen silly song was an interesting choice....END

5.0 out of 5 stars Hysterical for you and your kids, November 18, 2003
By
I love the Veggie Tales movies almost as much as my three year old son. They are funny at multiple levels and carry a strong moral message that is age-appropriate for kids.

"Lyle" is my favorite of the Veggie Tales.Unlike most of their other tapes, this one is hosted by Archibald Asparagus who wants to "class up" the show. His first feature is "Omelet", a take-off on Hamlet with some very funny lines. The interlude is changed to "Class Songs with Larry" - a terrific spoof. The second feature is the side-splitting story of Lyle, the Viking who shares instead of pillages. The music is done in the style of Gilbert and Sullivan. Brilliantly done.

My son's other tapes are good, but after the first time through... Well, they get old fast. When he asks for "Lyle", I sit down to watch it again with him whenever I can. I enjoy it as much as he does.

5.0 out of 5 stars A "Classic" VeggieTale., March 29, 2001

This review is from: VeggieTales - Lyle the Kindly Viking [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have been a fan of Veggie Tales long before the wise-cracking, God-loving creations of Big Idea Productions became world famous. I remember first watching the first Veggie Tales thinking to myself, "This is going to be big." What I love most about Veggies is how the show relates on so many different levels. Like the Muppets and the less family friendly Simpsons, Veggie Tales speaks to people of all ages. Alluding to everything from Shakespeare to Disney to Monty Python, Veggie Tales has something for everyone. Not only that, but the show is able to pull off great feats of comedy without watering down it's Biblical message.

I was a bit disappointed by the last Veggie video, ESTHER. It was a great story, but many of the elements that have made Veggie Tales so memorable were missing (much of the humor, pop-cultural illusions, Silly Songs, intro, Bob). I'm glad to say that the Veggies are back.

With a message on sharing, Bob and Larry hand the show over to Archibald Asparagus who tries to put some class into the show. The show starts with a play called "Omelet" (The French [peas] don't appreciate Shakespeare much, Moliere is their man). After the performance, Silly Songs with Larry begins, but now it's Classy Songs with Larry, spoofing everything from Forest Gump to Fred Astaire in the process. The final segment of the show is a full scale production of the "lost" Gilbert and Sullivan "pop-up" musical, LYLE THE KINDLY VIKING. With plenty of catchy tunes and tons of laughs, LYLE THE KINDLY VIKING brings Veggie Tales back up to style. It's one of the most memorable Veggie Tales in several years. Ironically, Archibald Asparagus succeeded in his goal to bring class to Veggie Tales because LYLE THE KINDLY VIKING is destined to be a classic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shakespeare done by veggies...who could ask for more?, January 9, 2003
My fiance and I are huge V-T fans, though we've only been able to see a few episodes so far. We're trying to keep our collection limited to DVDs so they'll still be in good shape when we have kids.

I teach literature and my fiance is a norse history buff, so when I saw the Viking title, I had to pick this one up. We love it!!! The lessons are clear without being preachy and the subtle jokes are wonderful. "The last yolks? I'll chew them, Horatio." Bravo! We adore the Gilbert & Sullivan takeoff too. One warning-- the songs are so catchy, they'll be stuck in your head!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Veggie Tales Yet!, May 30, 2001
By A Customer
We've been fans of Veggie Tales since most people were still asking "Larry who?" and were thrilled to find that the first Veggie Tales program on DVD was our most favorite yet. For those that loved the compilation of the first Silly Songs video, this is a return to hilarity, with no boring spots anywhere in the program.

The DVD also has excellent bonus features on the making of "Lyle", and the trailer for Jonah (due in theaters next year - Yes! on the BIG screen!) shouldn't be missed.

If you love Veggie Tales and watch them as often as we do, be sure to buy them on DVD - they will last MUCH longer before starting to show the wear of having been played too much. Now we just have to wait for them to re-release the others on DVD!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funniest Yet., July 16, 2002
This Veggie Tales movie is the funniest one I have seen yet. I love the humor and of course the visual aspects are incredible.
With Archibald taking over the show and pretty much turning into Masterpiece Theater, it's sure to please since things go wrong in his perfect world. Jr. Asparagus plays the singing Lyle, which I love, and you will also see Mr. Lunt as a girl in Omlet. This is a must have for all Veggie Tales lovers. If you haven't seen any, I would say this is the one to start off with viewing. Well done!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have Veggie Tales, August 15, 2002

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This is the best in the Veggie Tales series on DVD. I have all the Veggie Tales DVDs, including the Silly Song (which I would also highly recommend), and I think the story script is the funniest. Although the stories are not based on any Biblical stories, the Biblical message is good and easy to understand. The only bad thing about the DVD is that it doesn't have subtitles. I've watched this DVD least 10 times with baby already. A must have. Enjoy...

We have almost every Veggie Tales video. This one and "Where is God When I'm s-s-Scared" are my kids' favorite. The music particularly seems to get them excited. I only wish I had waited for the DVD release!
