5.0 out of 5 stars sweet and profound, September 12, 2004

This review is from: VeggieTales - A Snoodle's Tale (DVD)
Because "A Snoodle's Tale" is different in character and appearance to other VeggieTales productions, I was a little reluctant to try it. But it has actually turned out to be a favorite of both my daughter's and mine. Softer colors and a rhyming dialogue makes this gentle and appealing to younger Veggie fans (think Dr. Seuss) without excluding the older ones, and the message, far from being a modern cliché of "just like yourself," is both sweet and profound. The little snoodle who is the hero of the tale is weighed down heavily by the demeaning pictures other snoodles have paint of him, so much so, in fact, that he is unable to fly. But eventually he learns that letting go of other's opinions and carrying only his creator's portrait of him makes him so light he can not only fly, but soar. He, in turn, gives his creator a picture he has painted, and the creator is so pleased, he puts it on his fridge. I actually got a little teary at one point.

My daughter and her friends of various ages love this story, as they do the rhyming Veggie version of the Good Samaritan, which is also included on this DVD. Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde is amusing, too, though not, I think, as much as the special feature home movie footage included of Mike Nawrocki practicing the gourd dance all alone in his living room.

All in all a creative, solid, amusing, touching venture. A better experiment than Larry Boy, in my opinion, and I hope they produce other Snoodle tales.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just What Are You Worth?, May 16, 2004

This review is from: VeggieTales - A Snoodle's Tale (DVD)
The newest VeggieTale features two fun stories with a silly song sandwiched in between.

Up first is "The Strange Case of Dr. Jiggle and Mr. Sly," a hilarious spoof of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. I love the original, and this adaptation is great for kids. There's nothing scary here as we learn the truth about the mysterious new Mr. Sly, wonderful disco dancer in a lesson about being true to ourselves. I especially loved the running joke about the hands and feet.

Up next is "Sport Utility Vehicle," the newest Silly Song. Here we get a lovely duet about how wonderful SUV's are. I'm warming up to it, although I must admit most of what it says is, unfortunately right on. Maybe it was just too close to home to be funny the first time around?

Finally we come to the title story. In classic Dr. Seuss fashion, we get a wonderful parable about the newest Snoodle who is trying to figure out where he fits in. When others make fun of his efforts to try things, he begins to get discouraged. Can anyone help him see himself differently?

This last story is a powerful reminder that we all need to hear from time to time no matter how young or old we are. When I'd first heard that this episode would be about self-worth, I was a little concerned. I shouldn't have been. The guys at Big Idea continue to study the Bible very closely to come up with their messages, and the reminder that our self-worth comes straight from our loving Creator because He loves us is right on.

In case you didn't figure it out, I loved this DVD. The intro and outro with Bob and Larry were absolutely hilarious. My only complaint was that I would have picked I Samuel 16:7 for Qwerty's verse, but I'm being rather nit picky by this point since they did pick a verse from one of my favorite chapters in the Bible instead.

As usual, this DVD is packed with fun stuff for everyone. At the end of the feature is "Flibber-o-loo," the other Dr. Seuss inspired Veggie segment. For the adult fans, there is a behind the scenes documentary and an audio commentary. Kids will enjoy the trivia game, interactive storybook, write the rhyme game, and more. And you simply must look for the Easter Eggs. There is some truly funny stuff hidden in a couple of them. Picture looks sharp in full frame and the full surround is wonderful.

It's nice to see Big Idea standing firm on the Bible as they continue to entertain. I'm already looking forward to their next release.

This has got to be the best veggietales ever! And that is saying a lot because I have every single one out there. The story about Dr Jiggle and Mr Sly is so funny and cute and true of how we always want to look different than how we actually are and the music is well written as always but the real star of the DVD is the Snoodle's Tale.

A Snoodle's Tale is brilliant, mature and yet so simple. God loves us because He made us and He wants us to live with purpose is such an important message especially in the world we live in today. There is a line near the end which says "a gift that's demanded is no gift at all." So simple yet so profound!

We recommend Veggietales to all our friends - even the ones who don't have kids but we have sat a couple of them down and shown them this one because the message is so important and comes across so well.

I think every child needs a copy of this DVD and to be reassured by their parents that it is a true representation of what God wants for them in their lives ( And maybe a few parents will get the message as well!)

Do yourself a favour and buy this DVD today!
