3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but newer VeggieTales videos are better
As my family's VeggieTales collection has grown, this video has come to seem crude in comparison to Big Idea's later work. The animation is a little rough and the pacing is a little off compared to later VeggieTales videos.

Nevertheless, this video is still enjoyable. "God Is Bigger Than the Boogieman" remains a favorite VeggieTales song for my children.

VeggieTales launched 10 years ago with this video, which includes two shorter segments. The first, "Tales from the Crisper," teaches Jr. Asparagus that he has nothing to fear because "God is Bigger then the Boogie Man." The second retells the story of Daniel in the Lion's Den with songs feature Larry as the hero and Archibald Asparagus as King Darius. (Mr. Nezzer hadn't been created yet.) In between is the very first silly song, "The Water Buffalo Song."

Watching it again this weekend, I was struck by two things. First, how much fun this video is. With Jr. they perfectly captured a little kid and his logic and created some truly funny moments with talk about the slime monster. Although the funniest moment belongs to Daniels chatter as he's being carried to the lion's den. The second is how far they and the technology have come. By today's standards, the animation is bad. Their recent projects with bigger budgets are much better looking. However, that doesn't affect the fun at all. I almost guarantee that you'll have one song or another stuck in your head after watching this.

If there's a better way to teach kids Bible truths then this series, I sure don't know what it is. They're truly entertaining for the entire family. Heck, I buy them and I don't even have kids.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Video With Christian Lessons For Children, May 2, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: VeggieTales - Where's God When I'm S-scared [VHS] (VHS Tape)
High quality computer animation and Christian themes has made this one of our family's favorite videos in only 3 short days! Bob (a tomato) and Larry (a cucumber) are vegetables that our three pre-school age children laugh and sing along with as the characters explain there's no reason to be afraid of the dark because "God is bigger than the Boogie-man." Larry also stars in the title role of "Daniel and the Lion's Den," a great story told in a manner and fashion for young viewers to understand and relate to. The video closes out with a short scripture for young viewers which helps children learn biblical verse and how it can apply to their young experiences. As soon as other videos are released (currently only one other "Veggie Tale" video is available out of a series of nine) we will quickly be adding them to our collection. A definite must for parents who set high standards (quality and morally) for what their children watch if they must watch TV. We can't say enough good things about the video. END

5.0 out of 5 stars Who knew that scallions could be so entertaining?, May 9, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: VeggieTales - Where's God When I'm S-scared [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Purchase this video not for the first story, but the second. The first story isn't one of my favorites, perhaps because it isn't very Biblical. It tells the story of Jr. Asparagus being scared of a television Frankenstein that looks curiously like a piece of celery.

However, the second story - a clever re-telling of Daniel in the Lion's Den makes the entire video worth owning. The scallion song and dance routine is among my favorite in the entire Veggie Tales series of videos. The creators have done an excellent job of song-writing, animating, and story-telling. Great fun!

5.0 out of 5 stars No longer afraid of bedtime, September 3, 2004
My son at the age of 2 had started having trouble sleeping in his own bed throughout the night. We have had the VeggiTales movies before and he really loved them (and still does to this day), but when we bought this one I just knew it could help. It teaches our children that the scary things they see in modern TV, and modern cartoons even, are just make-believe. It also reenforces that GOD is with them everyday and in every way. Not only do I highly recommend any of the VeggiTales movies to my family and friends, but I also do so to anyone I meet that asks about my opinion of them. If you want your children to have good values and respect others despite their differences then I say get these movies.
By the way my son is now 3 years old and sleeps soundly every night and I do not mind taking 30 minutes out of my day to let him watch this before we go to bed. It's our tradition and it still works.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best in a GREAT series!, January 8, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: VeggieTales - Where's God When I'm S-scared [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Although we have nearly every tale the produced by BigIdea, I have to admit that this is still my favorite. The music is catchy and fun, and the stories are easy to follow for a small child (2, 3 or 4 years old).

In the first tale on this video, Jr. Asparagus stays up watching a scary show, and later gets the heby-jebies while laying in his bed in a darkened quiet room. Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber ("I'm a cucumber, NOT a pickle!") show up and explain that Jr. doesn't have to be afraid because "God is bigger than the Boogie Man". A song that turns into jumping-on-the-bed fun follows, and Jr isn't afraid any more. I think it's great because one of the challenges of bringing up children is giving them the security they need! This one sticks to a simple message appropriate for very young children.

I also liked this one because for very young children, story lines with a lot of action sometimes are too hard to follow. Some of the other VeggieTales that we have I think will be better understood by my children as they get older.

The story of Daniel and the lions' den is done just as well, and again is very appropriate and easy to follow. This one deals with jealousy, trust, and doing what you know is right even when it's hard.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Video!, November 26, 2000
This review is from: VeggieTales - Where's God When I'm S-scared [VHS] (VHS Tape)
My two year old daughter loves this video - and so do her dad and I! The first half of the story is about Jr. Asparagus who is afraid after watching a scary movie. The Song "God is Bigger Than The Boogie Man" is one of the best of all the VeggieTales songs - and that's really saying something because there are so many great ones! The second half of the story is a great retelling of the story of Daniel, and it includes a great song from the jealous wise men as well.

This is one of the best VeggieTales videos in my opinion - the songs are top notch, the stories are very well done, and the message comes accross loud and clear in a way that is meaningful for small children and adults alike [Hey, I sing that Boogie Man song when I start worrying about the Bills - its just as relevant to me and my worries!]. One warning though - since watching this video, my two year old is fond of saying "Just four more minutes..." when she's not ready to go - just like Jr. Asparagus!

5.0 out of 5 stars Welcome to VeggieTales!, March 7, 2005
By
Wolfe Moffat (Franklinville, NY) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I think a lot of people knew that this was the first VeggieTales episode, but some are like, "What's the difference?" A lot. I can just imagine the reaction to this first episode when it was aired how many years ago. You meet Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber, the host of this wonderful show. They warmly welcome you and your little one, "Welcome to VeggieTales!" The also announce that they are there to answer YOUR questions. Who has questions? Kids! Well, this letter happens to be be about being scared. So begins the first episode of our favorite show for us and our little ones!

We finally meet for the first time, a veggie favorite, Junior Asparagus. He's watching "Frankencelery"!!! Mom says time for bed, and maybe he shouldn't watch scary stuff. Junior insists that he isn't scared. But what happens when it appears that monsters are in the closet? Enter Bob and Larry! To this day, I happen to love the song, "God is bigger than the Boogie-Man" just because I personally loved the catchy way it was all played out. Little did I know when I first heard it on Riley's (my daughter) first CD that it was from the very first episode.

But then you are introduced to... BRRR BRR BRRRR!!! (trumpet blast, people!) A SILLY SONG!!! And so we are introduced to "The Water Buffalo Song", the first of so many cherished silly songs that we've come to love and enjoy.

BUT WAIT!!! The show isn't over. Not yet. Another lesson in being scared, this time with the story of Daniel. This time we meet Archibald Asparagus as King Darius. But who else do we meet? Those 3 bee-boppin' leeks! And they tell about Daniel in the lions' den. It still isn't over yet!

We head back to the kitchen where we find out what we have learned today. Hey, am I right in assuming that the "What have we learned" song is just what the doctor ordered for Bob, or does that kind of get on his nerves? But we still even have one more thing, IMPERITIVE to this show. We meet QWERTY!! QWERTY always has a Bible verse for us concerning the show for today. I also think that this computer might have a craving for meatloaf. So, that's the first VeggieTales in a nutshell! One more thing...

God made you special, and He loves you very much! Goodbye!

This video is so good to help children keep in mind that "monsters" are really make-believe. It is Christian-based and has some really lively music which is very catchy. Through the Veggie Tales videos, my 3-year old grandson has devotedly watched and learned several of the biblical stories for children. Very entertaining and catchy!

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful childrens' video, April 30, 2000
This review is from: VeggieTales - Where's God When I'm S-scared [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This video is simply wonderful. My sister got this for my four year old daughter for her birthday, in particular because she was exhibiting some fears, especially at night. Believe it or not it works. My daughter is no longer afraid to go to sleep by herself at night. She sings "God is bigger than the boogie man . . ." to herself and it gives her comfort. The video also has some silly moments. She and her sister will laugh hysterically. I like it because it truly is good, clean fun and is only 30 minutes. I find it amazing that there exists a gentle video that I approve of that my daughters also like. I would recommend this video to any parent of young children who wants to sneak in some religious messages in with the inescapable videos.

This review is from: VeggieTales - Where's God When I'm S-scared [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I'm a 36-year-old mom and I adore "VeggieTales"! It's hard to pick a favorite video in the series, but "Where's God When I'm S-Scared?" is one of their most special videos, because it was the first in the series. The "Daniel and the Lion's Den" episode is especially well-made and has some beautiful music and narration. But I'd recommend ANY of the videos--you'll love 'em!
