Slyly combining pop culture references with a Christian sensibility, these anthropomorphic vegetables make moral tales appetizing, as well as good for you. As the title implies, this is an 90-minute compilation of material from earlier videos (
Where's God When I'm Scared?,
Are You My Neighbor?). While each episode ends with a Biblical quote and a capsulation of the episode's lesson in virtue, the presence of God is more overt in some stories than others. Eclectic parodies of
Star Trek (featuring the U.S.S. Applepies) and
The Grapes of Wrath (with some cranky, name-calling grapes) share time with a modern retelling of
Daniel and the Lions' Den, in which the lions order their new buddy Daniel a pizza. Puns abound (Frankencelery replaces Frankenstein), the songs are clever (You'll be singing "God is bigger than the bogeyman" whether you want to or not), and the messages are as fundamental as "Love Thy Neighbor" (translated for children as "Be nice to the new kid on the block."). The invention of former Bible college student Phil Vischer, these videos have been building an audience through Christian bookstore sales and have now broken through to more mainstream audiences. In the theme song, a chorus of vegetables sings "There's never ever, ever, ever, ever been a show like
Veggie Tales" and that's probably true.
