Must have resource for offroad expeditions, November 19, 2003
This review is from: Vehicle-Dependent Expedition Guide Hb (Hardcover)
Tom's reference is so well known it is refered to by it's initials (VDE). It contains nearly all you would need to know to plan and execute an offroad expedition in vehicles. It is also full of useful info for any form of offroad driving and camping.
The book is partitioned into sections covering key topics in a very technical level of detail. Tom's explanation about oil grades, Breathable fabrics, vehicle suspensions, and driving approaches are better than any I have seen. And they are just a few of the topics covered.
The color photo's are outstanding, and this book would be just as comfortable on a coffee table as in the deepest sahara. (But don't waste it indoors, use it as intended)
The hardcover is out of print, and highly desired. There is a softcover updated version which is becoming available. It is B&W only, but has updated technical info and costs.
I can't say enough about this book. There is a yahoo group (VDE) that discusses issues offroad expeditions, and this book is often referred to. There are also web sites supporting vehicular based expeditions that are useful as well. You can see a small list at: <http://pinztrek.com>

The Best 4X4BookXFar, March 26, 2008
This review is from: Vehicle-Dependent Expedition Guide Hb (Hardcover)
I'm not surprised this book is going for $730.
I bought mine the week it came out from the Royal Geographical Society in Kensington, the original full-color hardback edition. To this day, and I mean, literally, these very days just before a short 3-day jaunt in Oman's Musanddam, I consult it for practical tips. It is more expansive on even ancillary topics than any other book of its kind. It weighs the pros and cons of every possible piece of equipment that you might take and frames the discussion within the context of the scale and terrain of the intended expedition. It is especially gratifying for Defender owners who benefit from the many 90/110 tips found within the book. The writing is lucid (if colloquial at times) and the pictures stunning. Track this book down and enjoy.

excellent book, July 14, 2005
This review is from: Vehicle-Dependent Expedition Guide Hb (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed reading this book.Everything that you could think of for a expaditon is in here. The only drawback of this book, is that it is written in England and dosn't include anything for travel in the USA.,nevertheless if you want to read about how to prepare for a off road adventure then this book is it.
