5.0 out of 5 stars A Historical Romance Fan Read
Tracy MacNish is a name to remember for future historical romance reads. This novel has everything a good old fashion historical romance needs. 5.0 out of 5 stars A Historical Romance Fan Read, October 12, 2005
This review is from: Veiled Promises (Zebra Debut) (Paperback)
Tracy MacNish is a name to remember for future historical romance reads. This novel has everything a good old fashion historical romance needs. The heroine & hero are strong characters with complex circumstances and mean villians that weave into their relationship. You can't put the book down. You will have a sleepless night, so make sure you have time for this one. It is worth making the time for. So bring out the tea, put the kids to bed, and curl up with this enjoyable historical romance. What a thrill to have a new writer give us what romance fans need. A great story to not only take us back in time, but away from the realities of the modern stressful life. It a simple formula, but has worked for generations - boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl. If you don't like this one, then you just don't like the real romance genre. I am reminded of Bertrice Small, Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, and even Danelle Harmon comes to mind. Tracy gives it to us all. Can't wait for her next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing., October 10, 2005
This review is from: Veiled Promises (Zebra Debut) (Paperback)
Unlike the other customer review, I found this novel to be a breath of fresh air. Not only is it well researched and well written, it will keep you up at night in order to find out what happens next.

The characters stay with you throughout the day- I found myself telling the story as if I have knew them, or it was a movie I had just seen.
Most fiction books I read end up dusty on a bookshelf. Veiled Promises on the other hand will stay off the shelf and in the hands of of all my friends so I may discuss and re-live the story again and again.

Bravo to Tracy MacNish for writing a great story that does not fall under the same old boy meets girl cotton candy novel, but actually makes you think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic writing - a sweeping story, January 3, 2006

This author has a gift for writing - her skills are beyond what one typically sees within this genre. While the relationship between the hero and heroine are the central backbone of the story, it transcends being a 'romance'. It's truly a great historical novel. Not a fluffy or light-hearted tale, I relished the realism. No sappy fluff or predictable storyline here. I highly recommend you take a chance and read this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A MUST READ, June 19, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Veiled Promises (Zebra Debut) (Paperback)
Thank Goodness!! Finally, a breath of fresh air in the romance genre! In her debut, Tracy MacNish does not shy away from the gritty side of life; she writes a different story, yet the essential elements of a romance remain -- a strong love relationship between the hero and heroine and a happy ending. In fact, all of the tragedies the characters must endure along the way to achieving success in their relationship make the happy ending even more trimphant.

I liked this story from the very beginning because Camille and Patrick fall instantly in love and that is seen very rarely in a romance -- usually the reader must wade through so much arguing and hatred between a hero and heroine before love is found. MacNish, on the other hand, depicts the immediate attraction between her two characters beautifully, sweeping up the reader in an incredible love. By the time circumstances separate these two lovers, the reader is so committed to the characters' love that the book is un-put-downable. At this point in the story, yes, Camille and Patrick spend a portion of the book apart, but the reader is never bored during their separation as the author keeps the action going nonstop. I think that the author also wanted to show that Camille and Patrick had a love so strong that it could endure ANYTHING, a love that would never die, even through an extended separation. And in this, MacNish succeeds magnificently. The hero and heroine come back together having both grown -- which is essential to any main character in a book -- and their love is stronger than ever.

As I said, this romance breaths new life into a genre that sorely needed it, and I commend Tracy MacNish for having the courage and intelligence to write a story of this kind. If you like sappy, fluffy romances, then I suppose this book may not be "a must read" for you, but if you can appreciate something that breaks borders and makes you think and feel on a more profound level, then I highly recommend this novel.

2.0 out of 5 stars How to Torture A Reader, October 7, 2005

As a writer aspiring to be published myself the farthest thing from my mind is to crush the attempts of another, yet this book was relentless in its use of sadistic punishment and it's not true that the characters were refreshingly flawed. At the very end it made no sense why Camille was suddenly able to summon some spirit, because there had been too many incidents prior to the final straw which should have forced a will to emerge. If we were to believe our hero in the end that she was so strong, then we are left to grapple with the question of why her strength remained torturously dormant when confronted by her mother's never ending malice and evil actions. Some of the times that Camille yielded you were left wondering why, since a truly strong spirit would have found a way to defy her mother far sooner.

I had images of this author being threatened with non-publication unless she agreed to a volume of violent torture, sadism, martyrdom and self-loathing that even the most uncensored cable channel would refuse to show.

I twice went back to the bio on back, searching for some reason for why this fresh faced authoress, with a seemingly quaint life, would stoop to such a vomitous outpouring. No character in a romance could hope to develop personality enough to overwhelm the overall effect of grim endurance that both the characters and the reader are forced to share.

I hope that she will try again and try for a little balance. Her opening passages showed that the author does indeed feel at home with a pen and a plot.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible and boring, December 8, 2005

I can't belive how bad this book was. It has to one of the worst books I have ever read. Reading Veiled Promises was so depressing. I was left with no hope for the main characters to be rid of the horrible mother. The mother was violent and sadistic. Characters were either too over the top like Camille's mother who misquoted the bible to torture her family. And under developed as in Camille's brother who was secretly gay and had no backbone to proctect Camille from their mother. He just got drunk. Then the servant who just had to be told to whip Camille
while her mother watched. The servant had no emotion at all he was just doing what is boss told him to do. It simply did not flow.

This book was written in away that I didn't really care what happens to the main characters. Yuck describes this book the best.

If you want to read good books with a diffrent story like than most try these
The Mysterious Miss M (Historical) by Diane Gaston
The Duchess Diaries by Barbara Dawson Smith
One Little Sin by Liz Carlyle
Lord of Desire (Warner Forever) by Paula Quinn

But skip this one.
