Book Description

5 and up
No rattling bones about it. There's never been a horror book like this one before. A madcap spoof on tales of terror, this clever meeting of broomsticks and slapstick, monsters and mischief is so funny, it's scary. Just how funny, you ask? Let's just say a "RIP"ping good time is in store for those who know a good joke (or a devilishly bad one) when they hear it. And, how scary? This comedy of horrors promises to leave even cowards screeeaaming for more.

Completely original, wickedly zany, this hilarious tongue-in-cheek collection of silly spine tinglers and spooky rib ticklers is Kevin O'Malley at his ghoulish best.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

"In a hilarious send-up of the horror genre, O'Malley brushes off the corniest, silliest, creakiest old chestnuts on the face of the planet and recycles them with pizzazz," said PW. Ages 5-8. (Nov.)

From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3?O'Malley takes tongue-in-cheek humor and combines it with loony Halloween horror in this current entry in the upside-down and inside-out genre of storytelling. The author has used for his inspiration those silly, scary tales that children delight in telling and hearing around a campfire. In the first story, a boy is chased by a coffin; when he arrives home, he grabs a box, throws a cough drop at the coffin, "AND the coffin stopped." The classic wrapping-paper routine is here, along with some genuinely scary items like a plate of mixed vegetables and a report card full of "Fs." Full-color illustrations depict lots of screaming mouths and wide-open eyes. An energetic page design and various fonts and type sizes provide visual appeal while a dog, a mouse, and some flies add commentaries, asides, and bad puns. Kids will eat this up.?Susan Pine, New York Public Library

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for visiting 4th grade classes, December 18, 2001

I am a children's librarian and use Velcome with 4th graders. I am always amazed at how well the book works and at how it anticipates the audience response -- it helps if you read with a campy Transylvanian accent. There is no better book to read if you have visiting 4ths, especially around Halloween.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very funny and entertaining for the 5 to 40ish group, January 12, 1999

This is a little like a Mad magazine yet for some little people this is the perfect book to show them the world of reading and stories. I read this to a 5 year old who has gone through trama and is not into to school. I enjoyed it and so did the child. This is a book he really got into laughing out loud and answering the questions "Were you scared?" "Stop reading if you are scared" For the right child, one with a sense of humor, this is a good book.
