Perfect for visiting 4th grade classes,

I am a children's librarian and use Velcome with 4th graders. I am always amazed at how well the book works and at how it anticipates the audience response -- it helps if you read with a campy Transylvanian accent. There is no better book to read if you have visiting 4ths, especially around Halloween.

This is a little like a Mad magazine yet for some little people this is the perfect book to show them the world of reading and stories. I read this to a 5 year old who has gone through trama and is not into to school. I enjoyed it and so did the child. This is a book he really got into laughing out loud and answering the questions "Were you scared?" "Stop reading if you are scared" For the right child, one with a sense of humor, this is a good book.

There's a lot of groaning going on in this book.,

This is a book full of "scary" stories and jokes.
Actually, they're the corniest things this side of the great state of Nebraska. I'm not spoiling much if I tell you that the Viper makes an appearance. You know - he vants to vash and vipe your vindows? Yeah. That's about the level for all of these. The only sane man is the poor beleaguered dog, who constantly holds up signs indicating how much he thinks you should NOT look at those scary pictures (vegetables and your report card) and how those jokes are so funny he forgot to laugh. (He storms out at the end of the book.) Okay, so you won't be that amused. You've heard all of these before. Repeatedly. But if your kid is at that just-right age for getting jokes, I bet this one will be a big hit.

Excellent,

I was lucky enough to purchase this book for 25 cents at our public library's booksale over a year ago. I had never heard of or read it before. When I read it the first time to my daughter we both loved it. She still has me read this book to her most nights for betime. The book is so entertaining (especially if you do accents and sound effects), that one night while reading it to my daughter and nephew all the other adults in the house came over to see what all the excitement was about and ended up staying to hear the story.

This book is very clever. Children 6-10 years old really enjoy the clever verbage and detailed pictures. If read in the right dramatic voice, it's really fun.
