Editorial Reviews

Product Description

It's a journey, it's a trip, it's...The Veldt. An electro-rock fantasia of screaming guitars and retro synths. "Where were you when you first heard HB3? In every generation or so, an artist emerges to wipe the slate clean - from Charlie Parker to Jimi Hendrix to Jaco Pastorius to Nirvana. It's been a while...however, the mysterious HB3 has the potential to wake rock as we now know it from its corporate induced doldrums." -- Amplifier Magazine

5.0 out of 5 stars A sonic treat of drive, melody and high jinx, September 3, 2009
By Mario M. Zelaya (Los Angles, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
With its electro-choral opening and glorious hymn, the first track serves as an appropriate fanfare of what's to follow - a sonic assault of a recording. Sure, at the onset of the second track, HB3 teases you with a bit of a hippy-dippy breather, but soon enough the music is off and running again. The key to this recording is languorous melodies soaring over driving beat and sound. There's also a helluva lot of humor and high-jinx here - from the over-the-top TV soundtrack send-up of the title song to the head-bobbing bitterness of "Casual Betrayal." I hear too in a few of these songs a touch of Voice Farm's pop culture wryness (albeit with a harder beat). Progressive rock fans may get a kick out of "Harmonium". They may also hear a little Robert Fripp (e.g., "Requiem" from Beat) on "Green Fire in the Forest" - only in place of guitar, HB3 showcases the piccolo bass. Yes, how about those piccolo bass solos throughout! On "007", HB3 pays loving respect to John Barry's magnificent score for "You Only Live Twice." A surprising treat, the recording ends with an acoustic guitar-driven number - proof that HB3 can still play it hard and sing those aching melodies, even if the power goes out. This ain't no mere gizmo band. Get this CD, and make sure to play it loud!
