I think this may well be one of the best camera accessory values I have every purchased. I love the Nikon D7000, I use it in my job as a photojournalist at a medium-market newspaper. I wanted the grip to help balance the camera when using the longer 80-200mm lens and this is perfect! I have not had any issues with the grip, it has performed perfectly from the moment I installed it. Makes the camera look cool too! Considering I can buy two of these for the cost of the Nikon brand, I took the chance that this would work and have been very pleased that I did.

I bought this used on Amazon. It's great. Fit's perfect. You can use the Nikon battery or double AA's because it comes with 2 battery trays. Everything has worked as advertised. Very high quality rubber used which inspires confidence in the grip. Try it out before spending $220 on the Nikon product. Or, buy them both, compare them, and send back the one you find to be of lesser value. I can confidently say that 90% of you will send back the Nikon unit when you factor in cost.

I chose the Vello grip for my D7000 because of the price and it seemed to get some slightly better reviews than the others. There's plenty of other reviews, so here's some quick pros & cons for reference (and the reason for 4/5 stars):

Pros:

-Quality seems decent: nice rubber and the paints matches well with the camera body

-rubberized selection wheels!

-all buttons work as they should, nothing is backwards, and the shutter has both levels of function (focus-->shutter release)

-joystick is pretty nice, but needs some getting used to. You can press for selection and it's a bit quicker than the standard command dial

-recognizes OEM and 3rd party batteries and gives full details in camera's battery menu (using Nikon and Wasabi EN-EL15)

-and of course, great stability for portrait mode! but that's the same for any grip

Cons:

-battery drain in the grip is slight. I didn't like this. Not terrible enough to warrant a return but I remove the battery now when not in use

-the issue with the camera not reading any battery being inserted (I think I've narrowed this down to having a low charge battery in the grip--put a fully charged one in and no issues). This has only happened a few times.

-the mounting wheel is a little jiggly. But it's only jiggly when you sit there and play with it. I've never noticed it moving a bunch on it's own and it's not audible. Those around me never notice it either.

AF-L and AF-E controls did not transfer from the camera settings. Camera would function on AF-L and AF-E release mode but Battery Grip would only function on release button. Command wheels did not function properly. Shutter speed was controllable but the aperture would not function. And this is right out of the box. Glad I wasn't out in the field shooting.

The grip works pretty good. The only thing is the rubber grip on the inside seems to have detached. Maybe the glue inside separated. It still works fine but it makes a popping sound when I squeeze it. All in all it's a good product.

Works great until it is supposed to transfer to secondary battery. I have primary battery in the grip (easier to remove and recharge) but when power transfers it locks up the camera. Crummy! Wish I had bought an OEM product.

I have really loved this battery grip. With its ability to use double A batteries or the EN-EL15 Nikon battery, there is almost zero possibility of your camera going dead at a shoot. The ergonomics are awesome, it makes the camera feel more solid in your hands, whether holding it vertical or horizontal. As far as all the buttons, switches, and adjusters go they seem to work very well, no extreme amount of force is required to make them funtion and they don't hurt your fingers. Their are two reasons I didn't give it a five star. First, the double A batteries are a little difficult to install and remove, requiring a quarter or flat head screw driver to remove. But once installed there was no problem, and they don't need changing that often. Secondly the battery grip, once installed, has some very small movement to it. Although this isn't a concern now it could become one later. Overall this is a great grip, considering its price next to the Nikon grip. I would recommend it.
