These bars are exactly what I was looking for. They have the perfect look to them. I love the fact that they are flat with no rise. They are excellent quality and have a nice finish on them.

I compared this Belleville with VO Porteur handle bar to put on my old 70's road bike with 9 cm quill stem. I keep my saddle slightly higher than the handlebar.

After some test rides, I decided Porteur over Belleville.

I really loved how Belleville looked on my bike – the narrow, simple bar made my bike look much nicer and special. Finish and quality was great. Actually, the VO logo on Belleville was sharply engraved and looked higher quality than the stamped VO logo on the Porteur bar.

My physique is small or even x-small in American standard and the top tube of my bike is very long so I thought Belleville would work for me and the long 18cm reach would help to bring the handlebar closer to the saddle. However, here are the issues I found during my test ride.

- My knees touch the bar end if I open my knees while pedaling. I have to keep my knees close to the bike frame while pedaling. Bow legged cyclist is totally out of question with this bar.

- When I try to make tight turn, my knee can get stuck between the frame and handlebar and momentary lock the handlebar.

- My knees can kick my elbow and push the handlebar and get me off-balance unexpectedly.

- If you use the bar end shifter or inverse break levers, these clearance issues will be even more pronounced.

- The long grip makes the steering a bit twitchy. May be because the grip area is too far behind the center of the stem.

I could be mindful of my knee placement and get used to with this bar but since I ride my bike to commute everyday, I think these issues are potentially dangerous.

I think Belleville handlebar is more suited for (and originally intended to) a Dutch style bike with the saddle much lower than the handlebar.

I would give these 5 stars for quality and finish if those were the only criteria, but they are very narrow; best for small people and kids. I think they are only 17" wide, so take that into consideration. If you are broad in the shoulders, I doubt you will be comfortable with these as they create a compressed feeling in the chest, which is not what you want when doing aerobic exercise.
