My Book VelociRaptor Duo

Extreme speed, high capacity storage - Built with two 10,000 RPM WD VelociRaptor drives inside, My Book VelociRaptor Duo delivers extreme speed and high capacity for high-end video and photo editing, 3D rendering, graphic-intensive design and more.

Move data at unprecedented speeds - The revolutionary Thunderbolt connector provides two channels of up to 10Gb/s transfer rate in both directions. This allows data to travel both ways without compromising bandwidth. This means video files are imported faster, visual effects are rendered in record time and you can power through your projects.

User-configurable RAID for speed or double-safe data protection - You can select the RAID mode that's right for you. Choose RAID 0 (striping) for the performance you need when designing or editing graphic-intensive media files. When the drive is set to RAID 1 (mirroring) it provides double-safe data protection by automatically generating a duplicate copy of your data. Set the drive to JBOD (Just a Bunch Of Disks) to use as two individual drives and select between HFS+J or ExFAT per disk. Ideal for running Windows OS on a Mac.

Daisy chain more drives for more speed - The dual Thunderbolt ports allow you to daisy chain more drives for more speed and higher capacity. Connect a Thunderbolt display and other Thunderbolt-enabled peripherals to achieve maximum efficiency and productivity.

High-speed multi-tasking - The revolutionary bi-directional Thunderbolt technology delivers unmatched speed for multi-tasking while video editing, 3D rendering and completing other graphics-intensive projects.

User-serviceable - Want to replace a drive? Simply open the case and exchange the existing drive. If you fill up a drive, you can simply remove it and replace it with a fresh drive and begin saving even more of your creative life.

Lightning-fast boot drive - My Book VelociRaptor Duo can be used as a lightning-fast system boot drive. So while others are still starting up their system, you are already working on your creative masterpiece.

WD Drive Utilities - Register your drive, run diagnostics, manage RAID or JBOD modes and more using WD Drive Utilities.

It's very quiet.

You can hear it running, but I wouldn't say that it is excessive.

I measured over 400 Mb/s. Very close to a SSD in performance.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The advantage of Thunderbolt attached drives is speed comparable to having the drives connected directly. In this product the drives are two 10,000 RPM Velociraptors, some of the fastest non-SSD hard drives you can find. The tradeoff is that they are not cheap, lack the larger capacity of slower drives and are a bit noisier.

Like the other My Book models, there is quite a bit of heat generated, but its less of a concern here ate least with regard to the drives. Specifically, the other My Books use Green drives which are not as robust as the Velociraptors. Also the Velociraptors are actually 2.5 inch drives within a frame that acts like a heatsink. There doesn't appear to be any differences in the case materials or cooling between this and the other models (this one does include a Thunderbolt cable), its still a cheap case.

Because of the steep differential in price between this and the next model down, there really needs to be a need to have that extra bit of speed to justify getting this especially with the ability to daisychain Thunderbolt devices so two slightly slower devices could be used at the same time. This meets the needs of a very small niche but is overkill for everyone else.

Other issues:

No off switch.
Needs reformatting for use with Windows.
The device will only work with the supplied drives. It is designed to lockout on anything else.
The device is only accessible via Thunderbolt.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
The big draw of this is obviously Thunderbolt and the Velociraptor drives. And yes, both are fast, but WD makes another Thuderbolt product that costs 2/3 of what this system does, and has 3 times the storage. I have it also, and I can say that for large files this device can has come 45% faster, though that's not always the case, and the speed difference almost disappears with small files. To be fair, it's hard to do a really controlled comparison, and I haven't compared them with that level of rigor. Also, I have a workstation at work that has a Velociraptor boot drive, and for random access I don't notice a speed difference between the V. and a good 7200 rpm drive. (I'm not saying that there isn't one, but it's not much for non-sequential use.)

The WD Thunderbolt devices compete with some of the other expensive Thunderbolt external drives, such as the LaCie equivalents, and the WD versions are significantly less expensive. However, I have one of the LaCie devices at work (not the competitor for this, but the competitor for the WD 6TB drive), and in my opinion they justify the price difference. Why? The LaCie drives seem better made. (I may also be prejudiced by the fact that I've had great luck with external LaCie devices, with some running for six years, and maybe the better build doesn't make a difference.)

With all of the devices I've mentioned above, the capacities assume you run RAID 0, because if you run RAID 1 (which mirrors the data) the capacities are cut in half.

What makes me uncomfortable about this device is that it gets very hot, and the drives are loud.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product ( What's this? )
This product provides an extremely fast Thunderbolt solution for Mac. I measured over 400 Mb/s. Very close to a SSD in performance. Compared to the MyBook Thunderbolt 4 Gig drive I recently reviewed it is much faster. The performance comes at a cost however. The drive is significantly more noisy. It is not as noisy as the Lacie 6 Gb Thunderbolt drive on my desk though. If used for many hours the fan can rev up to full speed and be quite loud. Most of the time though the drive is fairly quite.

One thing that was nice to see as compared to the MyBook Thunderbolt 4 Gb was that a Thunderbolt cable was included in the box so there was no need to go out and buy one. Setup of the drive was extremely simple. I experienced no problems with the drive software included and it caused no problems with sleep mode as earlier versions did with the WD 4Gig Thunderbolt. I am running OS 10.8.2 on an iMac. In the past I have got very good service out of WD Velociraptor bare 10,000 RPM drives. This drive includes two of those very expensive drives and that is what increases cost.

This drive is highly recommended for those that need absolute maximum speed for such things as HD Video editing and processing.

This is a great external storage solution for the new (Late 2013) Apple Mac Pro. You get 2TB of storage via Thunderbolt that performs similarly to an SSD (over 350MB/s read/write) at a (current) price point that makes it good value. It sleeps automatically when the Mac Pro sleeps and wakes instantly with the Mac Pro. It's very quiet. In my office, I couldn't even hear it (with normal ambient noise) and in my quieter home office, it's only barely audible when idle but you can definitely hear the drive head chatter when it's working hard. It's the perfect compliment to the new Mac Pro if you need more storage than the internal SSD can accommodate.
