4.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Entertaining
Heres a movie I thought would be a waste of time. To my suprise the story is interesting and character setup was good. There were some funny parts, some that dragged and some that rocked. A suprisingly entertaining film for the Sci/Fi enthusiast.

VELOCITY TRAP is thematically an intergalactic western, replete with shootouts and bad guys vs. good guys. VELOCITY TRAP is thematically an intergalactic western, replete with shootouts and bad guys vs. good guys. Martial arts hero Olivier Gruner plays a cop who is framed for the murder of a fellow police officer and transferred as a security guard on a vessel hauling forty billion dollars in cash from banks from 32 planets! Of course, some space pirates want that money so they dock onto the ship and proceed to terrorize the crew. This crew includes Alicia Coppola (any relation to Francis Ford?) and Bruce Weitz as its crusty captain. The thieves include Ken Olandt (A Time for Revenge), Jorja Fox and Jaason Simmons. Craig Wasson has a brief role as a mining executive who also has a contract on Gruner's ex-wife; in the future, marriages are contracts that can be purchased for the right price. This interesting element never gets full attention; we never know what happens in this regard. The movie suffers from a quick climax, and one that tries hard to be "cute". But not a bad film all around. Special effects are pretty good for low budget film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Surprised by movie, April 4, 2000

Although I bought this movie only to get a better glimpse of Alicia Coppola (who's career is hard to follow today), I was surprised by the quality of the movie. The action scenes were good, the dialogue wasn't cheezy overdone sci-fi blabber, the effects were terrific, and the overall production was good. If you like sci-fi, check it out! Or check out ufofilm.com for more info on the movie and others!

I bought this movie for Jorja Fox (Pallas), but I found it to be an entertaining romp through space. It was an old western polished up for the 90's, and I enjoyed it all the way. I also picked up the DVD, and found the additional information to be very helpful. I'd rate the movie higher if it wasn't so formulaic.

This is quite an entertaining film. It doesn't take itself to seriously and has some terrific special effects. In fact, the effects are the main reason for seeing the film. After a good sequence you can't wait for the next one to come along. That said, the sets are pretty cheapo affairs and some of the action (the shootouts) stretch credibility to new lengths. Some of the acting is pretty poor but the main cast members are fine. There are certainly alot worse films to rent.

Is Phil Roth the next James Cameron? Probably not, but I had fun watching this DVD. If you listen to the alternate audio track, you'll discover why the gratuitous fight takes place in the opening scene. Other than that, this story is much more a thinking man's action flick than a plain B-grade shoot 'em up. All things considered, a very decent effort by all.

Written, Directed & Produced by Phillip J. Roth, this film is a good example of how to make a B Movie (B for BAD not B for 2nd rate). This was Roth's 9th film as Director, so I would have thought that he would have learned something about film making by the time he got this far. I suppose directors have to learn their craft somehow, however, I don't believe that this excuses the release of such a bad film. Phillip J. Roth is now on my list of filmmakers to avoid.

As for Olivier Gruner, what the film world doesn't need is a mannequin that talks. He should have stuck to skiing or kick-boxing or modelling if that's what he was good at. He would be OK as an Extra so long as he didn't get any lines.

None of the players (I can't bring myself to call them actors) are believable in their roles. Once I had reached the shootout sequence, I couldn't watch any longer. I got so irritated by the predictability and stupidity of the story as well as the poor acting, that I hit the stop button.

How this film ever got released is beyond me. This disk ended up in the rubbish bin where the original print should have gone instead of being transferred to DVD and unleashed on unsuspecting buyers.

I was pleasantly surprised with this movie. Not too bad, wish there was less open ended parts to the story, but not bad all in all. Very good Special Effects considering it was a sleeper.
